Too Controversial To Have An Athleisure Line
So I finally got this thing when I got back from vacation. Right off the bat, it felt familiar to me, size and weight wise. I spent a day playing through presets and just generally futzing around with it--playing with the touch screen to see how easy it is to add/delete/move stuff around. (It's foolproof.) I spent yesterday dialing in a preset for the Def Leppard tribute. It's got a divided signal path with one amp model in each division (one clean, one dirty), then it comes back together for verb, delay, etc. Let me just say that the amp switching is seamless, no dropout, no noise, perfect. I experimented with the included cab sims, but I eventually went with a Celestion G12T75 4x12 IR that I had used with the IR-200 for the dirty amp (BOSS X-Mod model). I used the natural model for the clean tone and used the stock cab. I still need to do comparisons between this unit, the POD Go, and my old GT-8, but I think it sounds pretty damn good so far. More importantly, it feels better to me than the POD. Also, I never could bond with the nasal sound of pretty much every OD/Dist pedal on the Line 6 stuff. With this, I can slap a compressor block in front and engage the solo switch on the amp model, and it sounds/feels right to me.
Now for programming all the foot switches. With the POD Go and the HX Stomp, I was constantly having to go back and fix shit on this or that snapshot because I forgot to hold down a knob when I changed a parameter. With the GX, there are no snapshots or scenes, per se, but you can just assign anything to any fucking switch you want, and it's easy as shit to do. The CTL1 switch was already assigned to switch amps, so I left it. But I also assigned it to toggle delay and chorus at the same time, so every time I switch to the clean amp, I get those effects as well. Then I assigned switch 4 to toggle comp, delay, amp solo boost, and boost level up a few db for leads. Then I have just delay on 3 and just phaser on 2, for a couple specific spots. I also changed bank up and down to preset up and down and made the expression pedal control amp gain instead of volume. And I still have 1 switch left if I think of anything else.
I'll keep dicking with it for the next few days, then the first practice with the new drummer is Thurs. That'll be the real test.
