Shot some show photos for a friend of mine. Wound up getting some even better shots of the band that followed her.

Thanks! It totally looks like I did the HDR thing but that's just straight out of the camera.

Not even close to the same level as Shawn's work, but I was pretty happy with these.

This thread has made me realise I need to get the camera out more often! I really miss taking photos. I've mostly just been using my GoPro recently. It was perfect for taking on holiday!

I got the chance to photograph Steve Morse and Joe Satriani last night. I couldn't believe how restrictive the photo conditions were. I had to stay 15 feet back from the stage and could only shoot each band for the first song!

Great pics Shawn, you may have already answered this but what lens are you using?

I generally use 3 different lenses between 2 bodies(all Canon):
16-35mm f/2.8L II
24-70mm f/2.8L II
70-200mm f/2.8L II

These are often referred to as the holy trinity, or something like that, because they are very good lenses, and they also cover 99% of what most people need.

For Joe Satriani, I mostly used the 70-200mm on my 5d3 body because they wouldn't let me get very close to the stage. For concert photography, I tend to prefer wider angle shots, but wide angle pictures from far away aren't usually great.

Talk a little bit about what's necessary to shoot in most venues. Do you have to obtain permission from the management? From the artist? How far in advance? Do you pay for the photo pass? Do you have to demonstrate that you're not just a hobbyist?
