Just to add to the confusion, you're supposed to walk on the left side of the street if there's no sidewalk.

I don't understand urban and suburban areas that don't have sidewalks. You have houses. You paved the road. Put in a damn sidewalk.

There are lots of areas in the suburbs of NYC that alternate between having sidewalks and not. It's just weird.

You have to be able to see the car coming at you so that you know when to dive into the ditch!!!
If it’s coming up behind you, you’re not going to see it.

I agree. I was mentioning that to my son when I was in Portland this weekend. On the other hand, the city owns the sidewalk as well as the strip between the sidewalk and street, so there is that.

Concrete ain't free. My neighborhood has sidewalks on both sides as well as plenty of paved trails. Our HOA maintains them.
