When I was a sophomore in high school my Spanish teacher sent me to the office for insubordination. Why?
This was back in the early '80's and the Japanese economy was really picking up steam: The Japanese auto makers were making huge inroads into the American market while the American auto makers were finding new ways to screw the pooch. Japanese steel was taking over the steel industry, etc...
She said that the reason why we were having trouble with the Japanese was that we did not speak their language and it hampered trade negotiations. She used the auto industry as an example, saying that if the American auto makers, and policy makers, spoke Japanese it would have made for a better, more fruitful relationship.
I raised my hand and mentioned that the METI (Japanese Trade Ministry), and Japanese government rules on buying American cars in Japan may have a much greater impact upon our trade deficit than failure to speak Japanese. I also told her that it was an even bet that the leaders of the Japanese auto makers and the METI could not speak english very well. Lastly, I reminded her that there was a reason for translators...
She got mad, yelling mad, and sent me to the office. I was told by the Vice Principal to not show-up the teachers and received two hours of detention for my impertinence.
