As far as I remember from literary classes, some schools (or at least a very influential one) see the author's intention as irrelevant to the text's meaning.

I loved the scene in "Back To School" where Mellon brings Kurt Vonnegut into English class to explain to the Professor exactly what he meant and exactly why the Professor had it all wrong.
