That's pretty much what I figured but I don't know engines well enough to be sure. Would powdercoat be different?

no. it would still wear and cause problems. pistons and cylinder walls need to be super fine finish and bare metal.
of course, i don't know what's going on in the carbon fiber world on this. i'm sure something, but you'd have to greatly reduce the heat part or the carbon fiber would warp.
