Help! Good solid state head for metal

I used to own one of them, and I could never get any decent tone out of them

Not solid state but how about a Peavey VTM (60 or 120) with the DIP switches. Those go from great straight up rock to crushing metal with a couple of DIP switch flips.
 
Found the video I looked at a couple of years ago that got me interested in the Blackstar ID series:



Not new now (video is dated 2012) but the amps are still made.


That sounded shockingly good, although I definitely wonder how it feels to through. If those are six years old it might be worth picking one up used for my students.
