This is an interesting topic and it comes up frequently in company communications. Attempting to balance the reality of providing a cost sensitive consumer good with worker rights/conditions/pay is pretty damn tough in the apparel & sporting goods industry. On the plus side Nike was the first company in the industry to publish data on the 3rd party suppliers they contact with and the first to establish contractual requirements for employee working conditions for 3rd party suppliers, and audit their compliance. But there's still ways to go on ensuring compliance and improving working conditions. There's also significant initiatives underway to reduce the need for those traditionally 'sweatshop jobs' from the mfg and distribution process.
