Your First Good Amp

My first "good amp" was a Roland JC-120.

But... shortly after I got that JC, I also acquired an original Music Man 112 RD 50 for chump change and in immaculate condition. It was KILLER at coaxing out those Fendery Johnny Marr, Echo and the Bunnymen etc type tones.

Like a complete fucking idiot, I made the worst trade in history by swapping it for a gorgeous, all original, blonde 1964 Fender Mustang complete with original hard case.

I know what you're thinking...

On paper, I came out MILES ahead. In reality, I got screwed six ways from Sunday.

I've said it a thousand times... never has one of the "Big Name" guitar companies produced a more atrociously flaming turd of an instrument. It was gawddawful. It's ONLY redeeming quality was the neck pup when used with an EBow. That part was pure magic everything else sucked donkey balls.

When my super rare Black 1976 Gibson Firebird Bicentennial Edition got stolen, the Mustang was sitting right next to it in it's case (as was the Firebird), the heartless sonsabitches left the fucking Mustang behind. Apparently it wasn't worth taking.

Anyway, the amp was like this guy:

I wish I had pics... It was a 1966 Fender Dual Showman head (which I no longer have) into a Peavey 412MS (which I do still have).

God, I miss that head.

I had a Classic 50, "good" amp but didn't do it for me. Played a Peavey Ultra combo in a store and loved it, years later I picked up one of these used:

Played it through two 2x2 cabs (virtual half stack). Loved it but it was too much to lug around so I downsized. When I sold it the guy who bought it tested it through a nice 4x12 cab, sounded fantastic, kicked myself later for letting it go. Oh well.

And... it had the cool light-up color changing logo!:grin:

My first real amp was a Carvin XV 212. Heavy as hell and loud. Shortly after that I got my 1st Marshall JCM800 lead

Musicman HD 130 head. $120 at a pawn shop back in 95. Still going strong and I have never changed a tube. I really like the combination of a ss preamp and tube power amp.

My first good amp was and still is my lowly Peavey Bandit 65. If that's not good enough for you, then it's my Mesa Boogie Subway Rocket.

My first real amp was the Peavey Classic 50 like a few others here. I was never really happy with it, but that probably had more to do with my inexperience and simply not knowing anything about amps. I was 16 and sold it a year later, never really missed it.

I’ve always favored old Fenders and I’ve been through s few, even a Bassman Ten that I fell in love with after clipping out the silicone rectifier, punching a hole in the chassis (it’s a Ten, who cares, right) and wired in a Mullard GZ34. I still have it and still love it.
