My first real gig was when I was 18,and had only been playing a couple of three years. I was SOOO proud of myself for working up the intro, and being able to play and sing it

You Don't Know How It Feels.
Great song, and probably the most fantastic drum sound ever recorded.

Not even close for me regarding the drum sound. I think it is cool in its raw naked sound but I can name multiple drum sounds off the top of my noggin that I swoon over relative to that.

A matter of taste ain't it.

For me it's probably the best example of room mics nuked with an 1176 there is. And Ferrone grooves like a right motherfucker.

I do have several other fave songs/sounds up there along with it though.

Maybe Wildflowers for me even though I can't take listening to it. I associate that song with a really sad moment in my life and just thinking about listening to it makes my eyes well up. No other song has such an emotional effect on me like that.

Otherwise, Honeybee and Walls are two favorites... but almost every Tom Petty song is my favorite Tom Petty song.

I hate this thread. I saw the title and the first thing that popped into my head was Breakdown, because I am always playing the intro to that song, it’s just so damn fun to play. Then, I scroll through the thread, and I think I have 25 to 30 favorite Tom Petty songs. It’s crazy how many awesome songs he had.

His batting average was just staggering. I don't think most people really understood how good he was simply because the songs were often deceptively simple and so broadly accessible.

I was at the hospital this morning for a test and Free Falling started playing on the muzak there. I felt a bit melancholy.

In 2009 the original lineup of Sebadoh reconfigured and played a tour of selected dates and cities. For reasons personal and boring, I found it worth it to fly out to L.A. to see them at the Troubador. It was going to be throwback night for me: a band I knew and loved, in their "proper" lineup, playing one of the most guest-listy/obnoxious places ever, where I used to be industry guest-list scum.

They were pretty good, but if you know them, even at their sunniest they're a damn dark and cynical crew.

And then long-lost (as in: first time on stage in nearly a decade) drummer Eric Gaffney took center stage, a Gibson acoustic, and led them through an unironic and absolutely shell-shockingly moving version of "Free Fallin'." And even in that nest of vipers, there was nary a dry eye in the house.

It made me instantly and overwhelmingly love Eric and Tom Petty simultaneously.
