Yamaha Expands Pacifica Electric Guitar Line in the US - NAMM 2015

I think it's interesting that so many "cheaper" Strat makers are upping their game. I suspect they smell blood in the water, and know that Fender is dropping the ball.

Funny that Yamaha of America couldn't even get these a year and a half ago. Methinks it's time for me to call them back...

Not true. They were everywhere in the world, with the exception of the U.S., and that was by design. Yamaha was never able to compete with the likes of Fender here in the U.S., and finally gave up (with the exception of the really low-end Pacifica's). I think due to the success of this release and the demand for something different, they're giving it a shot here. I will ask them if my guess is accurate and see what they say.

We agree that it wasn't available in the US and now it's officially being released here. The rest isn't particularly relevant. All I know is that their most complete line release is available in Japan and I don't keep track of the breadth of releases outside of the U.S.

Hey, sorry -- when I write it tends to come off really aloof and harsh. Didn't mean to. :gu:

Yes, I agree. I am still disappointed with the lame neck heel, though.

It's cool. But yeah, the lack of Lanser neck heel is a downer. That was a great design and the necks were Warmoth. I wanted this one when they came out, but with an HB in the neck:

I still want it, preferably stock.

Huh? Between the excellent quality of the newer (i.e. post-06) MIM standards, the highly-lauded Squier CV series and the amazing value of the MIM Deluxe, Classic Player, etc. series I'd have to say that if Fender's dropped a ball, it was a bowling ball and has landed directly on the toes of its competitors...

I may indeed have spoken in haste. I do have a MIM Deluxe Player that I would part with, as well as a Classic Player Thinline Deluxe that is very good, as well. I guess when I spoke about the cheaper Strats, I was also thinking of Squire as a speparate company, even though they are part of the larger Fender corporate umbrella. I probably should have clarified what Fender lines were being pushed hard by the more budget minded lines.

What's the price range on these? I think they are awesome, and the old Pacificas are pretty well regarded.

The article link mentions MSRP for the three models from 630 to 930 USD. Figure about 50% off of that for a street price at the big retailers.

Do Yamaha dealers go that low? 30% off has always seemed typical. The shop I worked for wasn't a Yamaha dealer, though.

I really have no idea about Yamaha dealers. I think 40-50% off MSRP seems to be what I see for a lot of brands, but Yamaha may have tighter control over MAP and minimum sales prices. I don't work in the music business or retail, so I'm just going off what I have seen...and mostly talking out my ass.

9 times out of 10, when I was setting pricing, MAP policy was 30% off. Sometimes, rarely, it was 25% off (higher end Takamine comes to mind). Some manufacturers have set MAP prices per model that don't have a blanket percentage off.

For most manufacturers dealer cost before shipping is 50%, and a few (again, higher end Takamine) were only 40% off MSRP. Gibson used to have a really low cost compared to MSRP, but that was back in '01 and may be different, now.

Well, you would certainly know vastly more about this industry than I would, so I stand corrected.

Whatever the discount, I think these things coming in between 400-700 bucks sounds like a hit.
