Who makes the best compressor these days?

Ahh shit. Here we go...

I was kidding...I don't even know if they make pedals

I like the one that I use on my DAW, but it's not a pedal.
it's some DiirectX thing

the L6 one leaves much to be desired, IMO
Actually, they do... Did? It's part of the ToneCore series. They don't sell it as it's own pedal anymore, apparently, but if you have a ToneCore pedal you can still get the Constrictor module and swap it in.

I wonder... I've never had a compressor... I don't even know how often I'd use it... So, what would be a good inexpensive compressor that's simple for a guy who might step on it for a couple songs?

It's kind of funny, 2/3 of the recomendations are all version of the same circuit.

The MXR Dyna-Comp and Ross Grey Compressor are the same circuit with different brands of components used. But the Wampler Ego, Xotic SP, Barber Tone Press, Analogman CompROSSer, Keeley Compressor (2 and 4 knob), BYOC and dozens of others are all copies (with variables added) of that Dyna-Comp/Ross circuit.

Still using an original "script" Dyna-Comp myself, but since I play a lot of slide and fingerpick a lot, but considering moving to true compressor/limiters.

Thanks for the tips folks. I think I have a bunch of videos to watch and reviews to read. You guys rock!

How would you guys compare the script and block logo Dynacomps?

I think the big difference for me with the Wampler is that it has the extra controls. The Kkeley for instance sounded really good but the blend and tone controls really help me dial in what I want on stage. I always struggled with 2 knob compressors for that reason.

I have tried and think the normal Dunlop/MXR Block Dynacomp RI sucks. I'm told the '74 Custom Shop Script Dynacomp is much more accurate to real deal '70's Dynacomps. I dunno myself..I use the real deal.

I don't know about the custom shop dynacomp but the custom shop phase 90 was a big improvement over the original one that I used to own.

It's expensive but a lot of my rich hoity toity friends are swearing by the Barber Tone Press. I'd like one myself but it's about $159. Maybe in a few months.
