Who here rarely has homecooked meals?

I have some friends in London, who scoff at the idea of cooking your own meal. They go out to restaurants/have a takeaway pretty much every day of the week. They says it's not worth the hassle cooking your own meal.

OK, they live in London so perhaps people who live in the big city have lots of options (i.e. money), but I like nothing better than coming home from work, cooking something fresh and eating it

You don't have to live in the big city, and I believe a lot of folks who say "it's not worth the hassle" simply can't cook. On top of that, it's so easy these days to simply hit the drive-thru, or the buffet and load up a go-box.

Then you have the people who really enjoy cooking. My wife is one of those.

We ate out almost every meal for a couple months once, when our kitchen was being remodeled. I like eating out but it got old.

Im single. A home cooked meal rarely ever happens. Probably once maybe two times a month.

This was my weekend - Friday, after gig went to another gig - left that gig and had dinner at about 1:embarrassed:oam
Saturday - Local coffee shop and had a breakfast burrito. Saturday night - wings at a bar.
Sunday - french fries at a festival and then brisket at the local golf course restaurant.

Today for lunch had the left overs from the 1:embarrassed:0AM diner - tonight band practice and then I'll probably hit the Waffle House on the way home.

Damn - I'm pathetic.

It does get old. After a week of eating out on vacation, we started looking for smaller mom n' pop/home/cooked type places.

I guess if I was single I might do it. I used to go out for lunch every day at work but I don't do that anymore. Taking the three of us out for dinner every night would get crazy expensive.

We raised the kids so we rarely ate out. Once or daughter moved out and my wife got a full time job we could afford to do it more often, but we don't have many options which I'm happy about.

Yeah if I want authentic French, Vietnamese, Thai, Korean, or Indian I go out or order out. But mostly cook at home. If I do go out and it’s not Asian, it is usually some highly reviewed/rated chef in the area. I don’t go to family or chain restaurants. My cooking is at least better than that.

We eat out and order in more than I'd like.

I love cooking but 95% of the time when Mrs jbj says she'll cook something she comes in from work with take away.

i pretty much only cook on the weekends, because i'm only cooking for me and i'm not screwing around with all that after work and not getting to eat until 7 pm.
not worth it. (and yes, i can cook, well.)

When the kids were still at home, we'd cook probably 5 nights/week with the other nights being either leftovers or take out.

Now that it's just the Mrs. and me, we're down to 3 or maybe 4 nights/week. Maybe a little more in the summer when it's easy to fire up the grill and do some steaks/burgers/chicken with little cleanup required.

I agree with @micwalt about the health benefits. Besides knowing what's in your food, and being able to use fresh ingredients, the salt levels in most restaurant/take-out food is typically pretty high.

For me, it's not worth the hassle. There is me, my wife and 2 kids. None of us like the same things. When I cook dinner, I basically make 4 separate meals. A giant pain in the ass, but I do it 4 or 5 times a week.

In the olden days, I ate out a lot. Nowadays I wouldn't do that even if I could, because there's something about eating out that leads to terrible food choices -- too much fat, too much salt, too much meat, and just too much in general. That would kill me pretty quickly.

I've also become kind of particular about how the meat I eat is raised, which always makes eating out a bit of an ethical dilemma.

I very rarely have anything but home cooked meals, including my lunches at work.
This is me, but it was a stark contrast 6 months ago. My girlfriend likes to cook, so we cook together now. It's nice, actually. Before that, I would get takeout or make frozen pizza. :)

We plan meals, do grocery shopping, and cook a few big things on the weekend. I only cook in huge quantities, but we try to plan leftovers that can roll over into another meal. Grilled chicken leftovers one night turn into fajitas or stir fry a day or 2 later. Leftover sausages from spaghetti night turn into sandwiches. Also put a bunch of finished dishes in the freezer to eat later, especially soups and stews
Usually get takeout on Fridays, and lunch is a salad every day (also featuring leftovers).
The planning thing takes some time up front but saves a lot of time during the week.

We keep saying we're going to do that but we never do.

Just managed to burn myself pretty badly and almost set the house on fire prepping tomorrow's slow cooker meal

My new nakiri knife is pretty sweet though
