Who else is fed up with car culture and the auto obsession ?

With the exception of the full-sized SUVs (e.g. Tahoes, Expeditions, etc.), most small and midsize SUVs/Crossovers are really just spiffed-up station wagons. The majority of them come with 4 cyl. engines anymore.

Indeed, the wife used to have a Toyota Highlander, which was basically a Camry based chassis jacked up with a tall body. To be clear, I don’t hate SUVs, and I don’t care if people like them, I just prefer station wagons. If it came across as angry I’ll blame the stupid back pain and meds.

Gotta be honest, here - people are getting really inattentive and dangerous in traffic these days. It does endanger people's lives.

The cost of the vehicles is not as important as the risk to life. There's a reason why drunk driving went from a wink-and-nudge social no-no to a life-ruining criminal offense in just a few years. Too many innocent lives were ended.

Maybe some folks need to get some sense pounded into them to realize a car is a potentially lethal weapon.

Maybe some folks need to get some sense pounded into them to realize that car is a potentially lethal weapon.

Meanwhile, more self-driving features keep getting added that enable folks to drive while impaired. Enable Lane Keep Assist & Cruise Control and let the car get you home. To be clear, I don't condone that behavior, but those willing to drive impaired might see that as a tool to do so.

i say bring back manual trans only and manual steering. you'll either put down the phone or you won't have a car.

and once again I will say imho a lot of the reason is all the "safety features". people like to blame "smart phones" which goes back to the flip phone and before that the brick phone, the whole "hang up and drive mentality".....I's gots news....the phone is probably the least of it.
You've got gps in all cars now and the screen is located where the radio is...center of vehichle on dash which means you need to shift your eyes and then you got all the apps and the touch screen radio interface....

On to safety features....4 wheel anti lock, lane awareness or whatever they call it...etc people feel that their techy car WILL save them. This means less distance to the car infront of you, less awareness to whats in back of you, to the sides, etc.....It translates to dangerous driving habits

Studies now show that texting while driving is worse than drunk driving. I watch people on the freeways everyday swerving in their lane and can see their head pointed straight down to their lap in their rear view mirrors.

a lot of the bad driving i see, i also see the driver fucking around with their phone.
not kidding, i see people blowing red lights at 4 out 6 intersections i'm stopped at.
i don't mean the light turns red while they go under it. i mean the light has turned red and cross traffic has green, and they're still blowing thru it, often times turning left thru the traffic.
yes, we have intersection accidents somewhere in this city about every hour.

Wouldn't be awesome if cars followed a track that was set in all the roads and groups of cars were linked together so they couldn't rear end each other, and each group of linked cars only required one driver, and you could travel in other cars if you wanted to? That would be awesome.

NO. That would not be awesome. Take a fucking bus/train if that's what you prefer.

I agree with mongooz. Go back to manuals. If one hand is on the wheel, and one on the shifter, you can't hold your phone and your mind is concentrating on the task at hand. Driving.

Lets make all bikes big tandems connected together so you can all push up that big hill together! Wouldn't that be awesome? You could then concentrate on screaming Wheeeeeeee!! going back down the hill, in 37 part harmony. Yay.

I could take a train.

First I would have to drive an hour to the station, then another hour and a half to go 43 miles. Then walk 6 blocks. That's close to 3 hours door to door, that I drive in 85 minutes. Many of my coworkers do take the train, but it just doesn't work for everyone.

Would you agree that with a modern car you are able to stop in a shorter distance and because of such you can get by with say a car length between you and the one in front vs the three car length we were all taught years ago? Like wise do you ever feel like you should wait to pull into traffic like with an old carbureted car or do just pull in ?

That’s kinda the point I’m trying to make . Most folk nowadays trust their cars too much.
