White Elephant Song Assignments

Had never heard the Donovan song before. Have to think about what to do with the sitar part.

TBH I would rather have had the Cars song, but I'll see what I can do with this.

I hope no one expects my version of the Cars song to sound like the Cars; I suggested the Donovan song because I'd love to hear how someone else would interpret it.

I'm gonna mumble and hack my way through this wretched Dylan tune, then I'm gonna be an asshole and submit my own cover of God Part 2 because I love that song so, so much. :-P

Seriously.

The Joan Osborne song is one of my all time favorite songs. that's why I picked it.

It should be on spotify. Fuck the Dylan version. Seriously.

I started working on my version last night as well. Considering the original and Johnny Cash's version, coming up with my own is going to be a bit harder than I thought.

I found versions by Donovan, Jefferson Airplane/Marty Balin, The Crystal Ball and Orange Alabaster Mushroom.

There is also an unrelated but somewhat amusing band named Trans Luv Airlines: http://transluvairlines.bandcamp.com/

Haven't sat down with the guitar yet, but it's definitely a two(ish) chord Dom7 modal jam.

This looks accurate on the page:

This claims to be the Jefferson Airplane version, but I'll have to listen more closely - lack of any Dom7 chords makes me skeptical, although the description:

The Fat Angel (1969)
Jefferson Airplane
Bless Its Pointed Little Head

The first guitar (which Jack actually played) is playing a transition of a D5 chord,
tuned to drop D. It’s like this

D5 Csus
e|---------------------|
B|---------------------|
G|--7-7-x-5-5-5-5--5-5-|
D|--7-7-x-5-5-5-5--5-5-|
A|--5-5-x-5-5-5-5--5-7-|
D|---------------------|

That’s a rough representation of the rhythm, but you’ll get it as soon as you listen to
song. The song repeats those two chords over and over. The 2nd guitar (Paul) is just
feedback and weird noises in what might be the shape of the D5 chord. The 3rd guitar
is soloing in D mixolydian.

seems accurate, especially the part about "just feedback and weird noises".

Not waiting til the last minute this time. I have already recorded several guitar tracks for mine, and I think the bulk of you will be shocked by my treatment of them. It is dintictly anti-OGG sounding. Once again this forum has helped tread into new sonic territory. Never mind my earlier bitching about this song, I am totally loving the experience.
