ok I didn't read the article but werds are useful I'm sure you would agree, right? So if they aren't hipsters what do we call those who jump on the latest trend and are then quick to abandon it once it becomes popular and then they are on to the next trend>

hipsters have been around since day 1 and they always will be....tamato / tamahto *spits*

What you just described was precisely not the original definition of hipster. People jumping on the latest trend have always been around. Hipsters in LA, where most of these terms come from since Hollywood distributes them through media, were slightly out of touch with the latest trends and wore odd clothing at the time. Sliverlake, thrift stores all contributed to this little subculture. But once hipsters are portrayed in film or television all of those odd found thrift store fashions become fashion trends with clothing manufacturers remaking whatever oddball stuff from the 40s, 50s, whenever. People who wear the manufactured replicas are not hipsters. There are hipsters now wearing western clothing and cowboy boots. You can't tell what will stick and what won't in the moment.

I don't really care for the term, but 18 years ago it was clear who you were talking about in LA if you did use it. Since then it's been misapplied to trendy people, and hipsters were soon surrounded by people who just went out and bought the uniform. If the term has a positive meaning I have a couple authentic hipster friends to this day.

Beatniks in the 50s were hipsters. And as I've probably posted 10 times in the years I've been on this forum and HCGJ, hip is an African term that was a holdover from slave days and used by jazz musicians in the 20th century. Hip and cat mean something like a knowing or wise (hip) sage (cat or kat). And then it was used to designate people who were "hip" to drugs, which might also imply some kind of tribal spiritual knowledge. It's a good term and has evolved through the years since African slaves brought it over.
