I've never sold a guitar, that said I buy cheap ass guitars and do cheap mods to them until they fit my needs. All said I may have 250 bones invested, if I still only get 80-90 back on a sale, big deal.

Nope...but that said, I've done pretty well over the years when I've turned around and sold them. I think it helped that held them long enough for the used prices to stabilize.
One thing I have found is that your mods generally don't add much, if any, value for the most part and you'll net more cash returning the guitar to stock and selling the upgrade parts separate.

Other than Warmoth parts and the blow out Vox AC15, my McFeely is the only piece of gear I have bought new in a very long time. I always buy used and I look for a good deal, not for resale, but because I am a cheap bastard.

I never used to, but that Kiesel I bought has soured me on being that naive. If I had dropped nearly 2K on a Suhr or PRS, I could get that much out of it.... drop that much on a Kiesel and you have a couple hundred bucks worth of parts and a piece of firewood out of the deal.

I buy guitars with intention to keep... I never sell guitars. I've given some away to needy kids who have no means but really want to play (half a dozen)... But never ever have sold one. I'm usually picky about what I buy so it fills a requirement in my studio. Now if its bad enough that I have to find a way to get rid of it, I have a fireplace

I flip pretty regularly, so I almost always have resale value in mind. My MO is to buy stuff when I see good deals, keep the stuff I find interesting and flip the rest for a profit. I don't think I've ever lost money, because I hardly ever buy anything new. I have a couple keepers that aren't going anywhere, but everything else is potential trade fodder.

If it's new, then chances are it's an uncommon combo that I wouldn't find on the used market and I know that flipping it would be difficult.

I've had difficult just selling some nice guitars in the past, let alone breaking even on them, even though I bought most used. It was easier to move a Mexican Fender for a profit than to sell a '92 PRS at a loss.
So, re-sale is definitely weighed in any decision. I used to justify it as a hobby expense, but I now place a monetary value on gear.

This boat anchor. The top is beautiful and I like the piezo in the floyd but really didn't like the neck carve or sound....
so I swapped out the neck and put a pair of Suhr humbuckers. Also replaced all the electronics.
It sounded much better.... but shit... 9 pounds is too much for a super strat. Seriously, it feels like a Les Paul.
