Right now...the Sons of Apollo album. Much better than I expected, after seeing the couple of videos they had out (those songs make better sense in context btw).
Sounds like they had fun, quite inspired actually. Much better than anything DT has done the last decade imo.
Some random thoughts...Sheehan is strangely anonymous on it, which I really didn't expect.
Sherinian is still my fave of the keyboardists that were in Dream Theater at one point. Not as technically superior as Rudess, but much better sounds and actually knows to sit back every once in a while.
Thal is a hell of a lot better than I thought, there's this one fretless guitar solo on it that is quite mental.
And harmonically interesting in places as well.
As for Portnoy....DT seriously misses him, and you really notice it on an album like this.
Not so much the player, but definitely the arranging, vision and humour.
Yep, pleasantly surprised by this one.
