Well there you have it...

Holy crap, that is nice. HNED!

What are your thoughts so far? (Specifically on the Explorer, I mean. Not just your general musings.)

That's sweet. I'm not a trader/flipper, so is only own one of those if I had a reason to use it on stage, but I sure wish I did.

It's great. i'm not really much of a metal or hard rock guy, but I've always liked the way these looked. This is the first time I've had one though. As a bigger guy, I kind of regret not getting one sooner because it is super comfortable standing up for me. Very well balanced, and surprisingly light for as big as it is. About 7.5 pounds! It sounds really good too, and I've got it set up pretty well with low, buzz-free action. I'd love to play this in a live situation at some point soon, but for now I'm having a good time just noodling on it here at home. Very glad I got it!

That sounds fantastic. When I see an Explorer with a wood finish and covered pickups I always think of The Edge (and then I guess Skynrrd) and feel 'that's cool, I really want that'. But if it's painted then my mind says 'heavy metal' or ZZ Top

How would you say the sound compares to a Les Paul or SG?.

I always think of Rick Nielson.

Cool guitar, but to me, they're a stage guitar. Meant to be played low, and live.

HNED! I had one in slightly transparent red w. white pickguard. I bought it partly to prank my bandmates at the time, but also just to try something different. I really wanted a Firebird, but this one was a good deal. Then we did a Christmas gig and it actually looked kinda ho-ho-ho-ish. Yes, it is surprisingly well-balanced both standing and sitting, and compared with an SG it has a much better chance of saving you and possibly even your drummer from stray bullets.

Here's what AI thinks of the Explorer

AI Overview

An Explorer is not typically considered a "redneck guitar"
. The term "redneck guitar" is not a formal classification but likely refers to guitars associated with country, southern rock ie. Lynynd Skynyrd, or homemade styles, such as cigar box guitars. In contrast, the Gibson Explorer is most famously associated with hard rock and heavy metal music due to its aggressive, angular design.

I haven't had a chance to really crank it up but it definitely is in that realm. It has a Burstbucker 2 / 3 set (I think) and that is what I have in my LP...
