Top 10 guitarist of all time per Guitar World!!! So You know it’s fact

Someone mentioned Joe Walsh earlier. Ok, I could drop Brian May and Jimmie Page for Joe. For me personally, way more influence than May based on his style of play.

List some guitarists who you would consider the greatest of all time and which you would bump off the list given?

i think the whole idea of ‘best guitarist’ lists is stupid because I don’t think music is a popularity contest.

Honestly, it’s boring and counterproductive to music

Plus, rock music hasn’t really moved forward in decades. Or rather, people still like the same old. Honestly, none of the listed guitarists has done anything new or interesting in decades.

In terms of (relatively) younger players who aren’t entirely obscure, you could easily make a case for St. Vincent or Carrie Brownstein or Nels Cline given their work in the last 20 years. Of course, perennial rockist bro favs like Jack White or Josh Homme are as worthy as Dimebag. If you’re willing to have only Vai OR Satriani, you could certainly argue for a left of center geezer like Fripp or Beck. Other legendary type players who aren’t doing the same ol’ thing might be Nile Rodgers or Johnny Marr or J. Mascis.

And that’s before you get really into the weeds with session duders and YouTube guitarists and sub-genre metal and neo-prog folks.

And even if you included my recommendations, you’d still have a very very very safe list.

Remember those "Best of the year" lists from like Circus magazine in the eighties where "Best Keys" and "Best Bassist" year after year would be taken by like Tommy Lee and Gene Simmons? Lol

Basically whoever had a popular video.

Christ, that’s an embarrassing list.

Those so-called ‘readers’ should be ashamed of themselves. They do not fuck.
When it comes down to it who do play like? Frank Zappa? Knowledge and playing ability spanks everyone on the list. He would out rank Page, May, Abbott, with ease but who talks about his being one of the 10 greatest?

My point exactly in bringing up Paul Davids and Steve Terreberry. Lists are stupid and subjective. J Mascis is kick ass. Hell, even Billy Corgan is a great technical player but they'd never make a "list".
Where's Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood? How many people did I just piss off? lol
I don't give credence to any of these type things. It's just a source for debate.

So who's your popular video player that makes the 10 best guitarists?

You didn't piss off anyone. It nice to know you have a list of people. Johnny Greenwood would be in there with Steve Vai just being a music geek and player. Somehow he didn't get or keep the attention of people submitting answers to the poll.

Was this list generated by asking a garage full of dads to name 10 guitarists?

SURVEY SAYS — Yes.

Next up, we asked 100 participants to name something that they like big ones of and they cannot lie…

Is “lists of washed up or dead guitarists on the board?”

Jack White someone who with a guitar and a drummer captivated audiences. Yeah I can see him in there and I've watched and learned a few White Strips songs because of what they were doing.

Session players with influence as the greatest? Skunk Baxter comes to mind but that's because of the exposure with the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan (for me anyway). There are others but I'm not focused on them at the moment. I guess you could video game sound track (sound effects) players to that as well. The would be Vai, Satch, and Gilbert players. Johnny Hiland would be another.

This lists reminds me of something that happened at a casino gig this past week. I play slide guitar and sing some harmonies with another guy who plays guitar, harmonica, and sings. Nothing too ground breaking, but we have a great time and usually leave with 2-300 a piece after tips. This is going to become relevant.

There is another stage where a full band kicks off after we are done at 930. We do this a couple times a month and never have any issues. This past Saturday the full band starts sound checking at 9. So we stopped. The folks at the bar where were set up were disappointed, but we’re not getting into an argument with another group. In my mind if the casino wants us to play till 930 they shouldn’t allow another band to start sound checking in the same space before then.

We knew who was in the band before we saw them. The guitar player had come over to where we were playing to check out the “competition.” His posture and attitude is the exact reason I stopped going to blues jams. He 100% reads whatever magazine this is from.

I read them too when I started playing and learned a lot from them, but after a couple years, I realized it was the same articles about the same players pushing new boutique gear that I couldn’t afford.

Why the money is important. I know what the bands get paid to play the bigger stage and each member is not taking home any more than we are. That bro is getting paid the same amount I am to play the same amount of time and bringing way more gear. No exaggeration, 8 guitars and 4 amps to play some blues, and looking down on us for having a simpler setup. Fuck that noise.

Greatest guitarist is impossible to track. I know a couple local unknown guitar plays that could wipe the floor with half the guitarist on that list. There are so many scary good players out there right now.

A better list would be most influential pop and rock guitarists.

But ultimately any list like that is spitting into the wind.....

So how does it compare to the last Top 10 guitarist of all time per Guitar World? Not exactly any fresh new faces on that list. In fact many of them aren't even with us anymore. Why would this list be different from last year's list, or the year before, etc.?
