I often explain to my wife that even when I drive "semi-aggressively", it's for defensive reasons.
It comes from the assumption that I used to say "everyone is an asshole and out to get you" when the reality is more like "half of the people on the road think their hectic schedule is more important than your hectic schedule (I even admit to falling into this trap).... and even the best driver on the road can be having a bad day, didn't get enough sleep, is worried about their kids/spouse/job/pet/whatever and miss a stop sign or rush a light.... so I just approach every intersection assuming someone is about to run it, and always try to place myself in an outside lane or somewhere NOT in the middle of a cluster of vehicles.
Maybe that semi-truck can see you, but I always flash when they're passing so they know when they're clear, and I don't hover anywhere next to them. Usually I approach... pause to see if I can see their face in the side mirror or if there's any indication they're about to change lanes to pass, then get past them with some intent, and generally will then get back over in the "driving" lane. (big topic of debate with left lane cruisers. I only stay in the left lane in places where I know there are several exits with people leaving and entering, or when there are 3 or more lanes... the left lane keeps traffic from approaching in multiple directions. If someone comes flying up from behind, get in a middle lane and let them pass.)
