Question: Tony Petrocelli vs. Frank Cannon vs. Jim Rockford

Which seventies crime-solver would you rely on?

Wow, your knowledge of 70s American television is impressive. You're right, Columbo was great and completely different from the others and I enjoyed it. What was the name of the Columbo movie? That was even funnier.

Not sure which one in particular you're thinking of because a lot of Columbo was in the form of tv movies? There were many great ones, with excellent directors (Spielberg, Jonathan Demme, Sam Wanamaker) and guest stars (I particularly like the ones with John Cassavetes, Leonard Nimoy, Roddy McDowell, and Johnny Cash).

But yeah, the older I get, the more I go back to rewatching the shows of my youth. I will unashamedly binge Quincy, Starsky & Hutch or whatever while I'm pottering around the house. I like the comfort factor, I can get on with other things and then dip in and out because I've seen most of them before. I am easy to please. :embarrassed:

I'm rewatching The Invaders at the moment, now that was some Cold War, paranoid, flying saucer stuff!

I would certainly trust Rockford if it came to charming the ladies or using fake namecards to get info, but I am a bit concerned about his track record of getting beaten up. If it came to rough stuff would he be up to it, or would I be better going with rotund black-belt Cannon?
Barnaby Jones is taking you to court for age discrimination.

See you there!

Oops, wasn't a Columbo character in the movie I was thinking of. But he was a detective. Murder by Death (w Truman Capote, Peter Sellers, David Niven, etc.). Basically his same character though. Feature film at the theaters.

Good call! Murder by Death is hilarious!

I might rewatch it over the weekend. :thu:

Born in 1970 I have actually never seen any episodes of those...can I vote for Magnum P.I.....or better yet Dano?

My brother used to see Truman Capote watching dirt bike races at Indian Dunes raceway in Newhall Ca. His friends mom pointed him out. My brother would flag races there, and saw him often in the early 80's. Right before he died apparently.
Didn't you break your leg at Indian Dunes?

Good memory, yes broke my ankle (full, clean break) at the Shadow Glen course. Did not know Truman Capote hung out there. Kind of weird. Most spectators were relatives or friends of the racers. But great that someone would go out of their way to watch the sport. Wish I would have seen him there.

Rockford is the only show of the three I watched. He was pretty cool. He always got punched out once per episode, and he always had to call his police contact to run a plate for him.

I don't think any hero ever got beaten up more than Jim Rockford. He also got thrown in the cells a lot, and had to be got out by his lawyer.

He had the best J-turns though. I love those bronze Pontiac Firebirds.

The legendary Steve McQueen used to race on that track in the 70's. I have done a few laps on it myself on my Yamaha Yz 80. Truman very well could have known someone that was racing.
Ankle mojo.

Speaking of Steve McQueen, just last week I recorded a movie he stared in with James Garner. I have never seen 'The Great Escape'. I'm looking forward to it.

I was in 75, and I think all I watched was The Electric Company and an occasional episode of Hee Haw.

hmmmm. You know Louise Lasser actually had some manic episodes during the taping of the show (or at least that's what they reported in the news back then). And I believe she disappeared for a short time. You're not going to get that kind of method acting again.

OK, I just read the rest of the article. They're bringing it up to date with the Mary character being a new star of social media. Maybe it will be good, but it sounds like a formula for bad.
