One of my all time favorite pop/rock albums is the only album from the band Toy Matinee. It is a brilliant release from top to bottom, and it is one of the best produced/sounding albums I have ever owned. The type of album you use to check a sound system with.

Anyways - this weekend Tim Pierce dropped a video on Toy Matinee. Tim was the main guitar player (along with the late, great Kevin Gilbert) in the band and he interviewed the other musicians in the band about the project. Amazing how all of them feel this was one of the best things they have ever done, and it was at best a moderate commercial success.

This is a great watch/listen. This truly was an amazing release with brilliant playing, writing, engineering, and production work.

I watched that the other day and thought of you.
I knew Tim played on the record, but I didn't know how the whole thing came together.
I like how they said it was either the last record of the '80s or the first record of the '90s--it really is transitional. In fact, it reminds me a bit, sonically, of the Beatnik Beach record, which was the precursor to Jellyfish. It's definitely not '80s, but it's too '80s to be '90s.
That's probably why it didn't do well commercially too. It didn't fit into any of the neat little genre boxes that were required at the time. Same goes for Jellyfish, King's X, Fishbone, etc. It's a shame; the songs on the Toy Matinee album are amazing. I really need to get my hands on a physical copy someday.

I have a copy that Anton Pukshansky (RedAnt from the HC days) sent me about 15 years ago. I fucking hated it. Be happy to send it to you, if I can find it. But it is either SACD or DVD-Audio.

I usually do as well. Anton sent me that copy in order to extol the engineering miracle that that release was. As I said... (shudders)
