The weather

It's been 60's ish in So Cal. I should bust out a mountain bike ride today. That's the perfect temperature.

Stay warm everybody. Looks like it's getting down in the teens next couple of nights. I'll be dripping the faucets to keep my pipes from freezing in the slab.

The storm here seems to have parked over us, it’s been dumping harder for a while now. I’m weird, I love snowy, wintry conditions especially when I don’t have to go anywhere. I was out shoveling around nine. It was beautiful, clean, crisp and quiet.

I'd say we have about five inches so far. Someone posted that due to Winter Storm Fern the Dollar General is closed. You can tell who watches the Weather Channel. Thankfully the other networks aren't buying into the named storm bulletin. (I'm not a Weather Channel fan.)

We got about 7" of snow this morning in central MD, then it turned to sleet around 11am. It's been doing that all day. We've probably gotten 2" - 3" of sleet on top of the snow. Had it been all snow, we'd be well over a foot. It's a stay inside and watch football day. Hope we don't lose power.

It’s not a heavy snow here, but it’s constant and supposed to keep going until tomorrow.

Most roads are lightly covered, easily passable.

Oddly, the highways are not that great, but at least they are empty.
QEW is the major highway through my city.

I just came pretty close to crashing in the snow. The snow was about 1/16" of an inch deep. I was about 300 feet from a stoplight as it turned red, going 35mph, when I put my foot on the brake and just kept going. And going. And going. It was like I was on a sheet of ice. Fortunately the people sitting at the light saw what was happening and let me just slide into the intersection where I finally hit bare pavement and stopped.

We’ve had cold temps and about an inch of snow per day. Not a lot of accumulation.

Currently, it’s snowing. It’s about 12 degrees F. It’s sticking to the roads, making driving a bit hazardous.

Last forcast I saw called for 4 to 7 inches. We got maybe 3 inches. I used the snowblower before it got dark, hoping to save time tomorrow morning for the long ass drive. Snow is light and powdery. Where I started was already drifting before I was done.

My backyard measuring device told me we received 7 inches of snow on the north side of Chicago. A healthy amount but certainly not anywhere close to shutting down the city. I haven’t been in the car today but the main streets are most likely plowed and salted by now.

It’s colder than the balls on a brass monkey though. When I got in from round two of shoveling my nipples were so hard I could have used them to cut glass.

It stopped here. App indicates no more precipitation to fall. About 1/4 ice on top of everything. They oddly exaggerated local depth predictions here by over a foot. While I’m very happy it didn’t happen it sure freaked a lot of people out. Be safe out there.

I've been one of those sitting at the stoplight watching that happen. Glad you're OK and that nobody jumped the green into the intersection.

Lost power for about 5 hours yesterday. Lots of tree limbs down, pretty big ones too. Damaged the gutter on the garage. Single digit temps and ice everywhere.

Yeah, this weather is unpleasant, but it’s not been too bad. We had tickets for the opera and it was unpleasant enough that we opted to drive vs. taking the L. Streets were fine.

I spent the Sunday fixing my kid's e-bike, and bmx bike. The weather was outstanding.

His buddies practicing wheelies in the street. Ring camera footage.

And since plowing the driveway and coming to work, it’s continued to snow and my wife says the door dash driver got stuck in the end of the drive because they plowed the end of our drive shut again. :annoyed:

I was out at 6am this morning and our side roads are pretty deeply covered.
I could probably drive my wife’s Challenger through it, but I wouldn’t.

The truck was fine.

Main roads are snow covered but plowed down to a nice flat surface.
The snow is providing traction. For now.
The base is likely ice in most places.
