5 coats later...

One more coat should do it.

First coat of tru-oil and I'm fighting the urge to buy 3 more of these kits on pay day. This is going to be one plain, but beautiful neck.

It did yeah. I then tried to tru-oil it one thin coat. Made it way too dark.

I sanded it off and am deciding if I should do it again with some 2k clear that I have left over from my last project.

Got my new big bottle of tru-oil in the post yesterday and noticed how much lighter it is than the year old bottle I've been using and decided to try it on the body, boy I'm glad I did. This photo does it no justice, esp the light loose flaming on the upper half of the body.

Figured after two days of curing it was hard enough to put a clamp on it for a half hour, with a wider piece of plywood on the back to even the pressure. The neck joint can cure with the rest of the finish this way.

I have to say that I did have to shorten the neck a couple of mm, narrow it and shim it with toothpicks.

Bitter sweet "completion" of this build. I tried to wind my own pickup thinking that I should have had enough wire left after my stay set build for one pickup since they said up to 7 or 8 single coils. I should have known they meant vintage output and not 7,8 8.05 and 8.5k strat set like I made. So I got the coil wound until the wire ran out on me at a measly 1.5k. So I went back to the one that came with the kit figuring 5.4k was better than nothing but in taking it apart to see how it was put together I must have messed it up somewhere because I get no reading on the multimeter.

I stole then the P90 from the neck of my blue tele. 7.4k looked alright, installed it into the dogear cover with hot glue (because it's good enough for Reitze) soldered it all together, take it back to the amp.

Noise galore and very little output. My Zen drive with the gain all the way up doesn't even distort. Bridge is grounded and I see no problems th the wiring at all. No idea what is wrong. Waggled things around, disconnected the tone control. No idea.

Of course, my wife then told me to buy all the electronics and a new pickup, which I just did from Rockinger.com. Also a new Tusq nut because I sanded the one that came with the kit down too far and the high E buzzes in the open position. Geez.... Not a good two days of building.

This colour is impossible to photograph well, but it really looks like a black cherry and the flame on the upper half is a nice subtle touch. This is the best I can do for a photo.

Black speed knobs will be going on at the end. Frets were okay except for the second one which was high and needed filed down. Acoustically this thing sounds fabulous even though the neck joint usually will sound more transparent in time.

I waxed the body yesterday and hit it with some Old English lemon oil today which really made it look and feel better.

I'll be a happy man in a few more days I'm sure.

Pickup I ordered is from Rockinger itself, 7.4k and alnico, I trust them to put out a good product, so we'll see.
