Neurosis did a similar thing back in the 90s (both through silver in blood and times of grace; they simultaneously released albums from their alter ego ambient band which were meant to be played simultaneously)

Also, in non-death metal news - I got an ankle MRI today (troubleshooting some achilles issues). I was wearing earplugs, as per MRI-usual, and the technician was playing a random mix of stuff over the speakers in the room during the scan. Nickelback - Photograph came on, but it was during a segment while the machine was doing its very loud rhythmic thumping/pulsing thing, which made the nickelback totally unrecognizable, but instead sound like a very cool drone/doom thing (the scan ended during that song, so I only realized what it was when the machine stopped making noise)
