The Biking Thread

Had an amazing weekend of riding in Bend, Oregon. All dirt. Some of our family friends from here in Hailey, were my riding partners. Some smooth riding right in Bend, at a trail network they have there. And, an epic ride in old growth forest along the McKenzie River (the MRT, as the trail is called). Loamy, fir and pine needle covered earth punctuated, especially in the first 10 miles, with lava rock crossings and drops. I wore the removable face portion of my enduro helmet for this. Not because I am so gnarly and tried to ride every single thing (just some things), but because stuff happens. Fortunately, though a member of our party fell off the edge of a side hill trail and got a little scratched and bruised, no real injuries, and just a lot of good pics, smiles and a great experience!

A long time local racer and our favorite photographer was hit and left for dead a week ago. They caught and charged the driver later.
He will recover, but not without pain.

Sorry to hear about your friend. I hope justice is served on that one. And even more that he heals well and fully and gets back out there.

Despicable. Hopefully justice will prevail and your friend will make a full recovery.
I can’t imagine leaving someone laying in the road to die after an accident like that.

I remember when MTB Action magazine listed Bend as the best place to ride. That looked fun.

That's brutal. That's my fear about road riding. You can do everything right and that could still happen. I hope your freinds heals well.

You just visiting Bend? I have a couple mountain biking friends that live up there.

I love New Zealand. The Queenstown Trail is part of a network of trails and backroads that are nice cycling, that we sampled while in New Zealand. I liked their FB page, and they posted this today. and some shots from our cycle last spring, (their autumn).

I just ran across this video on youtube. Justin Williams started out on our "Montrose" training ride about 20 years ago as a young teen. He and number of other young riders from South Central LA would show up every Saturday for the training ride, and they quickly moved up the junior ranks in So Cal cycling to the pros. He has won several national titles over the years. Eventually he and his teammates made the 8:30 am Montrose ride so fast, that everyone I know moved to the 8:embarrassed:0 time slot (what we used to call the "slow" ride - people who wanted to Montrose but weren't fast enough). The 8:embarrassed:0 is now the old Montrose, with the slow people moving to an earlier timeslot of 7:45. But the 8:30 ride is now a bunch of really young guys who ride really fast. Justin isn't that young anymore, but his team are regulars on the ride as well as his younger brothers. Great guy, I've watched him grow up so I feel proud when I see him doing great things for cycling and his community.

We all came out to Montrose, for an 8 o'clock training ride. (Smoke on the what?)

The only wine bar I have been to was in the town of Montrose. Three Drunken Goats. They have a nice bicycle shop in that town as well.

I once purchased a flute from a guy on the streets of Montrose. $10 bucks.

Yes! I forgot that was Montrose.

So I think the ride had some history with the Montrose bike shop, but it never started in Montrose. It starts at Descanso Gardens, which isn't too far from Montrose. And that's just the hardcore guys. Everyone else waits for the Descanso group to arrive at Trader Joe's/Mission St in South Pasadena and start from there. Here's Mission St in South Pasadena.

And while we're at it, here's my high school. Whitter High.

It is getting close to the time when I will start riding both for sport and for transportation. Hoping to start on the early side this year and get a good start to the season. This vid made me happy. I am glad I live in a bike friendly town,

Rode yesterday, on my old 1989 Fisher Paragon converted to a 700c commuter+. I don’t have my new gravel bike. Still hoping, we’ll see how that works out with finances and such. The shop that ordered it in is closed “indefinately” while we ride this crazy thing out.

So, rode the bike I have. And it’s was nice out! Good to get out!

Stopped here where it started getting muddy.
