The Biking Thread

Couple shots from tonight's ride. These guys kicked my ass.

Not my buddy Ross though. What a good dude! Always a smile!

It was 15+ miles on dirt with over 2100 feet of climbing at flog the horse pace. Good stuff with good guys, and a Dale's pale with the guys after. Good night!

It's all relative.

I've ridden 70 hours (1250 miles) so far this year, which is why I'm still struggling to stay up with some of the other guys. Most of them have at least twice as much time in the saddle so far. I've been focusing my limited ride time on higher intensity, which is starting to pay off.

Well it seems like a MTB article primarily so most of it doesn't apply to me. I've never gotten into MTB and have been a road biker since my youth, though I don't look the part (no kit matching shoes and belt stuff here ). But riding a lot is always a good thing. And having fun too. I just shake my head when I pass someone and they suddenly find the urge to make it a race. Knock yourself out buddy but I'm riding for the exercise and the enjoyment and not to see who's fastest.

Yeah it is more about improving bike handling skills through play and not taking it too seriously. I have been on a quest to improve bike handling skills such as wheelies, manuals and cornering to improve how I handle trail obstacles and features.

I commuted last night and this morning by bike. Nothing long. half a commute each way. but enjoyable.

Here is a pic from the other assistant scout master who also is an engineer, with his take on the multi-user path signage in the area.

And my view from the little xtra loop I added on this morning. That is the Sun Valley Lodge back there in the background. Cool and moist, and the drizzle held the pollen count down. My nasal passages appreciated it.

I chickened out from riding this morning, taking care of some responsibilities instead. The heat just didn't attract me. The heat index later climbed to 109F.
I'll definitely get in a ride Thursday.

You can't really see it in this cell phone pic, but there is fresh snow on the pioneer/sawtooth mountains in the background as well. Kinda blends in with the clouds.

I just gave up and sold my mountain bike. The torn ligament in my foot, which had been feeling better after a YEAR, is fucked again. I picked up my kid and carried him a few hundred feet. So no riding this summer. I’m throwing in the towel and admitting that my body just isn’t cut out for hiking and biking.

On the upside, I now have a pile of cash, might as well buy an amp.

Thursday night with my "mens' group". Thunderstorms cooled it off, and looked to cancel the ride due to rain. But we showed up anyway, and hit a nice break in the weather, and the most epic conditions for this particular ride that is very technical, and can be very sandy (think kitty litter). The rain made everything ride great, and the views were spectacular as always. Always feel blessed to get to ride with these guys.

Also, though my stomach wasn't quite right, and I struggled on parts of the very goat trail like climb, I had several personal bests on the technical rocky descent. The new bike makes a huge difference.

^ Wow, that looks like a slice of heaven up there.

I've been riding much more in June with a total of 440 miles/24 hours. I started July off with 46 miles/2 hours 13 minutes on the fixed gear. :embarrassed: I haven't ridden it in many months, and ouch, what a workout.
If I keep up the work and rest wisely, I'll be in good shape for the Fall/Winter cyclocross races.

Congrats on all those miles!

Yeah, that is one of my favorite rides and riding areas. You have seen some of my other pics, which show the more sage land rides often, more toward Hailey. This is up 20 min or so north of Ketchum/SV and gets into our alpine riding. Things start to get more alpine halfway up the 12 miles between Hailey and Ketchum/SV when the valley narrows down, and you get deeper into the mountains. We tend to start south early season, as it is ready sooner, then move north. This particular area is open to bikes, but not many go, as it is very technical, and really tough riding up an old hiking trail to two alpine lakes, Prairie Lake, pictured, and Miner Lake. The descent is very rocky, chundery, baby heady, etc. It is an old trail, and some day, the forest service will probably re-work it and take away our lines. But for now . . .

Lift assisted riding just started up too. I have not ridden the flow trails up there much, as I generally ride up and down on the cross country trails, but they look to be improving every year, and I will probably give it a go this year. I may still ride my bike up the first time though.

EDIT: Dang, I can't get this vid to embed. Anyway, click the link. They have done a nice job with some flowy trails with not mandatory, but encouraging jumps and features. No North Shore of BC double black diamond, but a good place to have fun and build your skills. @Tig see edit.

@sunvalleylaw I did not need to see that video!

EDIT: I just looked at my Garmin log for June. Only 1371 feet of climbing! Some of you guys do that in one easy ride. thwap0

Generally our climbing on the average Thursday night guys' ride is over 2000 and sometimes over three. But our ride last night was only a little under 15 miles. It is a shorter one because it is so technical. So you get me on the miles.
