It can be really light and transparent boost, even on the humbucker settings...or put it on 1 or 2 and put it 12 and higher and it sounds thicker.

I played with preamp tubes in my Champ tonight.

Well, not really PLAYED with em or anything.

I used the JJ12ax7, the GE 80s military 5751 and the 50s vintage 12au7.

The RCA might have a little better sound than the others, but there's a big volume drop.
Well, actually, you can get a little louder clean sound with it, but the volume is on 12 and there's no overdrive to be found. Would be perfect if this was a hi fi amp. The JJ is overall my favorite. It sounds better than the GE and the gain is controllable.

Aside from the difference in volume, I don't hear a whole ton of difference between them. The new JJ sounds better than the old GE and the older RCA isn't THAT much better to warrant a big price tag. For the same price, I'll take the rca, but not at double or more.

It's a whole different ball game in an amp with 3, or 4 pre amp tubes.
