Swanson TV Dinners

I had some TV dinners when I was a kid in the eighties because I saw them on TV and had to try them. Probably because I just wanted the brownie. Even the brownie was gross, and it’s hard to make food even worse than my mom’s horrible cooking. We have access to much better frozen food today if there are good East Asian/South Asian grocery stores around.

Never. When we had a babysitter we'd sometimes do those frozen pot pies, which we'd cook in the toaster oven for what felt like two hours.

I remember come on rest my balls on top of the lid from the meal, Salisbury steak, get it hot from the oven and run to the bathroom, rest my balls

Hear that ding ding ding from the oven, lying in my bed reading boys life magazine, I knew that it was time to rest my balls on the hot metal, Salisbury steak, come on rest your balls on the hot metal

Sunday morning high school, sitting in a row boat, flies buzzing, stalk of wheat hanging out of my mouth, should be enjoying the day but all I can think of is that ding ding ding from the oven, Salisbury steak, hot metal for resting your balls on later in the day, at dusk only

I hear the oven ring a ding ding ding, grab that hot metal tray, before anyone can stop me, run to the bathroom, Salisbury steak, my eyes rolled back into my head, can only see the whites, I rest my balls on the hot metal

I think our first microwave oven was the Amana Radarange.

I remember Barbara Hale as Amana's spokesperson.

As for the TV dinners, turkey was my favorite.
I didn't have them often.

This, by a mile...

The beans freeze and thaw nicely, rice too. You could still taste the corn tortillas a bit as well. That sauce was a bit funky, but the rest was halfway solid.

My memories pale in comparison.
I did like Salisbury Steak best though. Maybe just not as much.

You make it sound like that's a bad thing.

I was lucky in that most of my family are pretty talented in the kitchen. The first time I had a TV dinner I distinctly recall it looking like barf and the salt corroding the surface of my tongue.
