Question: Strap lock installation

if i remember correctly, it had dunlops?
I think they were schaller if I remember correctly.

I now have the strap buttons on which I had installed in the mid-80's, which I believe came from gibson - they look like this: <> - but they are buttons, not locks. Don't use any locks on my strats - the only time they've been dropped is when I had the strap pooched up and put the guitar on w/o checking.

I have used black rubber washers from the hardware store, they work pretty well... but look goofy.

I have used Dunlop strap locks for years without a problem.
Yes you might have to drill a bit to extend the screw hole.
Look into locking straps too.

I've used strap locks ever since my strap let go of my acoustic and it plummeted to the ground, separating part of the back from the rest of the guitar, and putting a nice dent/crack in the lacquer. That was 25 years ago.

My Strats tend to get the Schaller treatment. Other guitars get Dunlop 7036 plastic strap locks or Grolsch washers.

Oh and to properly lock a strap to the endpin jack on my acoustic, I use one of these (StrapKeeper from Tapastring): http://www.tapastring.com/strapkeeper0605.htm
Totally works as advertised.

I use Fender bass string retainers as strap buttons. You have to widen the slot above the strap hole, but once it's around and latched in place, it won't come off. $3 each. :baimun:

also, and this has always been a question for me, but how the hell do you people not use straplocks? geez. at least use a Grolsh washer or something.

I switched to the wide football-shaped strap pegs from Stew Mac and others. I don't move around much.

I'm not too proud to get a big washer from the hardware store and screw the strap in permanently, either.

I used to do that until I started getting fat and clumsy and kept banging the back of the guitar on my forehead while pulling the strap over. :embarrassed: Now always flop the strap over my shoulder first.

Has any one used those big rubber washer thingies? I was just looking on Musicians Friend and see that Fender has a 4-set pack for $3.99

I guess you put your strap on the guitars strap post, then stretch the rubber washer over the post end so it's between your strap and the post end.

This is what I do now. MonkeyZero can attest to what happened last time I tried to use a cheap set of strap locks.:embarrassed:

I jump around a LOT. Occasionally, if the stage is large enough, or if I'm low enough and in proximity to the crowd, I'll do a little moshing while I'm playing. Unless I'm playing the Epi.

Also on the Epi, I've got a set of Loxx strap locks that I like. I just didn't feel good about screwing a strap straight into a semi-hollow.

Whatever the ones are with the little pin with the ball bearing.... those FUCKING SUCK!!!!

I use Dunlops. They usually have a longer screw than the originals. You might need to drill the hole. Make sure that you are using a bit that is slightly smaller than the screw diameter. Use tape on the drill bit to measure how deep to drill. You don't want to drill too deep.

Rarely you get lucky and the screw with the original strap buttons will work properly with the strap locks.

This!

All of my guitars get the straplok system installed before any live playing with others.

I don't have straplocks on my electrics, but I now use a Planet Waves strap with a straplock built in to it. It seems to work well so far.

I have a Planet Waves on my Ibanez and I like it. My Les Pauls I like a wider strap so those have the Schaller locks.
