Question: Strap lock installation

After watching the video of SVH's guitar and Wampler's guitar, what's the best way to install strap locks? Do you just unscrew your buttons and put the new ones in? Do you fill the hole first?

i use the screw from the original buttons with the new straplock. they usually fit with Schallers, which are my straplock of choice.

I use Dunlops. They usually have a longer screw than the originals. You might need to drill the hole. Make sure that you are using a bit that is slightly smaller than the screw diameter. Use tape on the drill bit to measure how deep to drill. You don't want to drill too deep.

Rarely you get lucky and the screw with the original strap buttons will work properly with the strap locks.

If the old screws will work, I use those. If they don't work, I use the new ones. If the new ones are smaller than the old ones, I stick a wood toothpick in the hole and fill around the rest of the hole with wood glue. Then about 24 hours later I drill a new hole and install the new straplock.

All I know, is that after watching that video... I am ordering a whole shitload of strap locks.

I'd just like to point out, that the only time I dropped my Les Paul Custom, it was when it had strap locks.

also, and this has always been a question for me, but how the hell do you people not use straplocks? geez. at least use a Grolsh washer or something.

I never used them because I am too uncoordinated to untangle the strap after it twists around a few times. Seriously, the inability to just quickly pop one end of the strap off and straighten it out drives me crazy. Plus, most of my guitars have large buttons and most of my straps are tight fitting to the buttons.

However, I'm starting to see the light.

They are on all of my guitars. First thing I do when they come home is strap locks and new strings.

I have the grolsh gaskets and a couple of the dunlop plastic jobbies on my guitars.....for my purposes, they work fine. If you jump around or want to pull a Wampler, you'd probably want the more stout options. The dirt cheap and simple aspect of the rubber washers appeal to my frugal side.
