Strange New Guitar Day - Gibson SG

How'd the JB sound in it? It has that upper mid spike that I don't think works in every guitar or every rig.

I didn't try it on my rig. Just when I was testing the guitar out. I have a JB in another guitar and they have more gain than I need from a guitar meant for slide. Besides I prefer 59's anyway as they are more dynamic. JB's are great but mid scooped for hard rockin'.

Oh the unmatched pickups are not big deal to me. My favorite pickup combo has always been SD 59 bridges with SD Jazz Necks. I do have agree with the sound and it makes me understand why Derek Trucks likes them for slide as well as Rod Price. It is a very resonant guitar like the DC Jr's.
I've never been able to pinpoint what exactly it is about my SG, but every time I play slide on it everything just feels so right. Most of my other guitars not so much.

It is very different. I can play slide on my Les Paul Standard as well but will not commit it to Open E tuning. I use the LP's so much more for everything else.

i had a '61 SG Special back in the '70's and it played and sounded great (P-90's), but sadly, it was so neck heavy that i was constantly pulling the neck up while playing and i traded it (and some $$) for a '71 LP deluxe.

Interesting that you perceive it that way. Even by SD's descriptions, the '59 has a scooped mid profile while the JB is upper mid-treble focused.

I see what you mean on the SD chart. However, it is the way I hear things. Consideration to note about it is your picking technique, where you attack the strings on your guitar and add in string gauge. The JB is a very high output pickup vs. the 59, making the 59 have more detail and touch sensitivity.

I really got to open it up yesterday but I do have to agree with you there. Strangely though I set the guitar up for slide with open E tuning. Also works well with my Melody Maker I have in the islands as I was practicing with it while I was there. I have discovered that the slide of choice really has a big significance on what sound, technique and playing dictates. I have tried a few and have gladly found one that works for me.
