Strange New Guitar Day - Gibson SG

Modern Saint

Starve your Fear, Feed your Dream!
All of you or well most of you here in Weinerworld know that I am not a fan of several guitars styles. So to consider one is unheard of, if not worse, buy one would be totally blasphemy. Well I guess hell is now frozen over.

Backstory: My bass player friend asked me about 3 weeks ago if I would be interested in joining his Foghat tribute. Apparently the current guitar player who was also in the Heart tribute that I once played in is now too busy. He is busy now playing with another Heart tribute along with a Rolling Stones tribute who is always gigging and touring the coast. Well the bass player asked to join the Slide Players group on FB and I approved his membership. Not soon after I approved, he PM'd me saying he didn't know that I played slide. I mentioned that I normally play slide in standard tuning and have been wanting to make the transition to Open E ala Derek Trucks/Duane Allman/Joe Walsh as Rod Price from Foghat does. He said that they needed a replacement since the other guy is busy and to think about it.

So after contemplating this for a few days I accepted. I enjoyed playing with the my bassist friend in the few Heart tribute gigs and he is a good player so I didn't mind. The gigs are paid and the band plays out every so often which is nice.

So with my commitment as usual to this type of project comes the research,
One of the things that I knew about Rod Price (Foghat's Slide Player) was that he used a Gibson SG.

After researching Rod Price more, he used two different guitars for slide playing. During the Foghat Live era, he use a 1961 Gibson SG Standard.

and up until his death the Gibson Double Cutaway Jr.

Well I contemplated heavily between building a DC Jr from Precision Guitar Kits but like anything it is how fast can I complete the guitar. I still want one to replace my stolen one from almost a year ago.

I also tried to get in touch with @IamSeaDevil as he had White Gibson SG Standard but he sold it already. Found that out from searching through the MWGL threads. I remember playing his a while back but wasn't interested until just recently.

Playing a Gibson SG - S.jpg

Well after searching through MWGL, Reverb.com, GC Used, Sam Ash Used and finally CL I came across and ad that read:

So I sent email correspondence on Friday and on Saturday before the OCBP jam I became a proud owner of a Gibson SG guitar.

Like any guitar I buy gets a cleanup job, new set of strings, straploks and a setup job. However with this guitar, I had to change the bridge pickup and I had one available. When I bought it, it had a Duncan JB, now it has a Duncan '59 in it. I am leaving the 490R in there.

Here is the '61 SG Standard Reissue

Nothing strange about that! It's a bit different in terms of the two unmatched pickups, but otherwise it's pretty normal! I'm finding with the SG I picked up this summer (first one I've ever had), that it's a rock machine through and through. Nothing I've ever played sounds quite as fat to me, either clean or dirty. Plus, it's nice to have a guitar that is light, thin, and feels barely there around my neck. HNSGD (new SG, not new strange guitar)!

Cool! I gigged with a mid 70s SG way back in 1990 & 1991. Sometimes I debate with myself about getting another one.

Thanks eveyone!

Are you gonna grow the mustache too?

Having asian blood didn't help me there. Can't grow facial hair very well.

Oh the unmatched pickups are not big deal to me. My favorite pickup combo has always been SD 59 bridges with SD Jazz Necks. I do have agree with the sound and it makes me understand why Derek Trucks likes them for slide as well as Rod Price. It is a very resonant guitar like the DC Jr's.

As for the Strange Guitar - never been a fan of SG's as I never cared for the shape.

So are you now a fool for the city?

And congrats on the new gig!

Yup and it is tuned to Open E. Irony is that Fool For The City is played in standard tuning on a strat -

How'd the JB sound in it? It has that upper mid spike that I don't think works in every guitar or every rig.
