Stolen guitar nightmare

I'm relatively certain that anybody who had that much gear also had it insured, but money isn't going to be able to replace all that stuff. I live right next to SJ, so I'll be keeping my eyes open when I look at CL, etc.

Since the notice doesn't have an exact time frame or description of individuals or a vehicle involved, I'm going to guess that the facility has no video coverage of where this unit was located.

That's something you should always consider when you're leasing a unit...if something happens how good will the security of the facility be in identifying who/what/when

Having spent four years as a facility manager for a self storage company, there's so much bullshit going on there...

First, how did nobody notice during a THREE MONTH SPAN that the unit was broken into? Are the units not individually alarmed? Did nobody go check?

With that many guitars, that would've taken a while to move all that stuff, so did nobody see that? Is it not on camera?

Also, why would you do that to those poor guitars? "Climate control" is a temperature range. It doesn't keep everything at 70ish degrees. It keeps it between 60 and 80 degrees and I wouldn't want my guitars dealing with potentially wild 20 degree swings.

Did this place not have any security at all? No employees? Only way something like that could happen if there's any security measures is if the employees knew or were complete fucktards and gave them access to the unit because "I'm his cousin, Joe Schmoe. He wanted me to grab something."

Wow that's a huge loss. I'm with @Chad, storing that many guitars, or anything of high value really, in a storage shed with measly Master lock protecting it isn't the best idea. Mojo to that dude. I hope he gets a bunch of them back, but I suspect it's the last he'll see of most of it.

In my brother in laws case, the facility was top notch, with video 24/7 covering everything. The issue for him, was he was temporarily moving back to Virginia from California. At first it was a 6 month stint that turned into 2 years. So he left CA and didn't get back to check his stuff for over a year. Then he decided it wasn't worth paying for the unit, so he went out to pick up the stuff he really wanted to keep which is when he found out his unit was robbed. Not many places are keeping security footage for a year and the time it would take to go through that much video isn't worth it since it could have happened anytime in a year.

That kind of situation typically applies to most video surveillance systems in general access locations; the value is primarily after incident documentation and if no one notices the incident, it'll be lost.

I can't imagine keeping anything of value in a storage unit. My brother in law had his broken into when he was in the process of moving from CA to VA and all of his gear was stolen. Unless you go there like everyday to check on it, you have no idea when the theft occurred. Like this guy, the robbery could have happened anytime in that 3 month window.

This. What a moron. I hope he had insurance.

many homeowners & renters insurance will cover off-premise storage but the limits generally suck.

Edit: from a quick google it looks like there's also several insurance companies you've never probably heard of offering unit insurance.
yeah I was bored earlier and looked around, and all of them maxed out for woefully less than this dude would have needed. there may be a place that would insure all that in a storage unit, but I don't see it. I think he might be fucked.

Not sure about that particular storage co, but most around here (I live in the general Bay Area) do not have alarms on units. You cut the lock off a door, nobody is going to notice. You could easily replace it with another lock and nobody would be the wiser. Some have padlocks which could easily be replaced, others have removable lock cores. Indoor units are temp controlled, and here in CA we don't have the bitter cold to deal with. Most storage places here have access control for the whole place like a gate or code access door. The employees are just in the office for new renters.

major mojo.
someone stealing that many guitars/amps and especially some of those vintages, is going to move them far, far away from where they were stolen.
if not in another country entirely.

AT least here in Southern California I could store my stuff at a cartage company if I really had to. Secure, climate controlled and I'm pretty that my gear would be the least desirable in the building.

Mojo to that guy. That sucks but having the best part of a million bucks worth of gear in a storage unit and not checking on it for 3 months???

WOW!!
