Stolen guitar nightmare

I have no idea what this would amount to dollar-wise, but just that nightmare feeling when you go to your storage unit and it's empty would be horrible.

STOLEN GUITARS

mail
My storage facility in San Jose California was broken into sometime between Sept 24, 2020 and December 23, 2020 and my entire collection was stolen. Please help me find my guitars and amps.

If you have any information regarding any of these guitars, please contact Matt Gach, Detective SJPD - 408-537-1310

Somebody knew they were there. And what they were. You'd need a truck and time to get away with much volume.

FuckingA, rough count of about 175 guitars at a conservative 5000 each is over 850K. And I bet it's considerably higher than that.

I can't imagine keeping anything of value in a storage unit. My brother in law had his broken into when he was in the process of moving from CA to VA and all of his gear was stolen. Unless you go there like everyday to check on it, you have no idea when the theft occurred. Like this guy, the robbery could have happened anytime in that 3 month window.

My initial thought was 'Why are your guitars in a storage unit?'. then I saw how many he had.

Yeah. Definitely an inside job. Add to that the fact that they might have been stolen nearly 3 months before he knew it and chances of getting them back are pretty low. I hope he had them insured.

Totes.

Not to mention that many thieves like to use storage facilities to stash loot while they're selling it on facebook marketplace or letgo so they're often on premises to see what's in other units.

Damn! I wonder how insurance on this is handled. I'm sure the owner of the storage facility is lawyering up.

That's not a collection of guitars, it's a museum.

The contract you sign states that you're responsible for insuring the contents against theft or damage and the facility is only responsible in cases of negligance

I'm relatively certain that anybody who had that much gear also had it insured, but money isn't going to be able to replace all that stuff. I live right next to SJ, so I'll be keeping my eyes open when I look at CL, etc.

having moved A LOT over the years (like an unreasonable number of times), I've had to keep most of my shit in storage on several occasions, even if for brief intervals.

more than once, I tried to find insurance for all of the stuff, but I was unable to find any. nobody wants to insure a storage unit. my renters/home owner's insurance didn't seem to cover stuff in storage, either.

Wow - that sucks!

Yeah, I know it's uncool to blame the victim, but a storage unit is just a place to store stuff. There's no real security whatsoever.

I hope this guy had insurance.

Frankly, if I had that many guitars with that much value, and my only option was to squirrel them away in a storage unit, I would seriously re-evaluate my life.

many homeowners & renters insurance will cover off-premise storage but the limits generally suck.

Edit: from a quick google it looks like there's also several insurance companies you've never probably heard of offering unit insurance.

Hell, all those guitars could be in the unit right next door.

It seems to me that trying to get rid of that many vintage stolen guitars would set off bells. No one is going to raise an eye about one old Jaguar being available, but all of a sudden, there's 50 of them?
