Spinal Tap II

I mean, maybe. Spaceballs lives on about 10 amazing lines, but the rest does not hold up at all.

This is true of most of the Mel Brooks catalogue. Young Frankenstein is the only one that’s close to perfection. The Producers might have been great, but Mostel’s was one of the great miscastings of all-time. Fatal.

Completely agree. YF is the only one that I enjoy as a complete film. My second fave scene ever is the "waking up in jail" scene from Blazing Saddles, but the rest of the film is unwatchable.

Agreed. I can totally understand why Mostel was a great stage actor, but he didn’t know how to tone it down for film.

That’s certainly a part of it — he was fine in A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum, for example — but I don’t think he really fully understood that kind of comedy and why it works. Probably a generational thing.

Wasn't there already a sequel? I seem to remember my hometown video store having some Spinal Tap content that was quite underwhelming.

No, no film.

They’ve done some appearances in character, a couple of albums, did the DVD commentary track in character, etc., but nothing close to a movie.

There was also a short, from some’70s comedy show, where the idea originated.

Yeah, I can't find what it could have been. Either mandala effect or maybe my video store only had the bonus features cassette of a 2-vhs reissue, and that's what I watched.

I really hope they pull it off but my initial reaction is no dont do it.
Obviously I will have to watch it.
Agree that YF is Brooks best film.

I can't imagine this working. If it is too close to the original, it'll just seem like microwaved leftovers. If it strays too far, it will lose the charm of the original.

In the minority here. Spinal Tap was not the Mona Lisa or, some other great work of art. I just don't get the worry that the sequel will live up to the original. It had it's moments but, they were so few and far between. That may have even been intentional as they were mocking documentaries and as a rule, documentaries are boring.

Well, you aren't wrong. BUT - Spinal Tap created a unique blend of slapstick, dry humor, wicked parody and just plain charm that sets it apart from most everything else.

Well, most of the cast from Spinal Tap also brought us Best in Show and A Mighty Wind which were equally as funny as Spinal Tap was, so I have high hopes here. Lance Guest is an excellent actor who has created many memorable characters, and he really knows how to steal a scene.
