Special type of guitar, HH, or P90’s for you?

Every once in a while I GAS for a simple LP Special type (not necessarily a Les Paul) of guitar with in a HH or 2xP90 set up. Probably more that type than a traditional LP type. Something about the stripped down-ness.

Reverend Sensei, Yamaha Revstar, Ibanez, etc.

If you were going to get one of those, would you prefer the HH or the 2x90 style and why? @Brian Krashpad , curious what you think too.

2 P90s. To my ears, p90s tend to sound better clean than the standard humbucker. P90s also sound great for that 'Mississippi Queen', early Sabbath heaviness. So all in all, I think they're more versatile for what I want.

Ummmm this ....

A Tribute transformed into a work of Art & Music

Of all of the guitar projects on my bench, one of them has a single P90 in the bridge, while another has a P90 bridge with a Humbucker neck. Both have tilt back headstocks with 3+3 tuners... but they're veeeeeeeeerrrryy different from each other. :helper:

Well, there's simply no substitute for a humbucker into a tube amp turned to 10. If you need that, then P90s aren't going to scratch the itch.

P90s are much more flexible and have a wider range of tones. You can actually use the volume and tone controls. With humbuckers, setting the volume or tone to anything other than 10 results in mud (at least for me).

That said, the P90s in my LP special are noisy as hell if I am within 10' of any sort of interference.

Given the choice between those two - P90s for sure. N0 contest. I really don't care for traditional HBs very much.

Now if the choice is P90s or Filtertrons (which are humbuckers...but a different animal) that is a different discussion.

When I got my Manta Ray I turned my HH Telecaster into a P90 Tele with BG Pure90's. I liked the guitar before but it didn't sound as good as the Reverend once I has a comparison (it was OTOH much cheaper so ). But I loved it after I put in the P90's and still do. Having one of each (SC, P90 (and yes I know they are SC as well) and HH) covers all the sonic space I will ever need to cover

The point of this is at some point, I am thinking about a simple "Special" style short scale rocker. I don't have a set neck HH guitar other than my Hagstrom. And because of the huge popularity of LP's, was wondering if I needed such a rig. But, . . . thinking the Hag gets me close enough there for what I need, and if I want just a fun rocker, a P90 guitar might suit me better. Could always go with some relatively inexpensive model such as a used Revstar with HH, and get a H size set of P90's too, I suppose. But, with all that said, I wonder if my tele with the P90 in the neck and A3 rockwind tele bridge pickup is close enough. Maybe, for sound, but it is not short scale, so, at some point, . . . GAS.

If I were to get such a thing, previous belt rash or nicks would not matter as long as the guitar performed ok, as the whole point would be to have a punky/power-pop/grungey machine. Also why I don't really GAS as much for the real LP style with the fancy top and all that.

I want a P-90 guitar, I've got mostly HB guitars. Two PRSs. My Strat's got two SD single sized HBs and the Thinline Tele has a Barden bridge and a full SD 59 in the neck. The Godin Session Custom has a neck HB, but a snappy bridge single, while the ASAT Special is the only true SC guitar I've got.

Currently jonesing for a Noventa Tele. Some demo guy suggested it was just a beginning of the series, so I'm hesitant as I'd really dig a thinline w/ two P-90s. I'm also trying to find the original pups for my Strat and Tele...maybe dropping them back in, but I fear they've up and left me after a coupla decades...

If that Noventa had 24/75" scale, I'd snag one right now. That thing looks awesome. I may end up building a warmoth one like it.

In fact, I got distracted and missed out on a Revstar RS320 (the cheaper one) for $200 shipped on Fleabay, with some belt rash and a couple pain chips on the headstock. That could have been a cheap way to go, and I could have fooled around with pickups for cheap. But maybe it is better to get a little better one.

I started trying to price one out w/ Warmoth. Oddly the didn't offer the Tele bridge route. Surely they know about cut Tele bridges. Sure, I could call them, but default to Strat hardtails when someone's looking to do a Tele build...strangeness.

That said, it wouldn't surprise if part of their deal w/ licensing from Fender included a moratorium on offering specs of new Fender models. Getting conversion neck is a tempting thought too...
