Dogue in teh desert
.....this is what happened in southern AZ about 30 miles N. of Tucson this morning...

even in the winter water is important in the desert. This is the first one of these I've seen The bottles were marked "public" or AZT (Arizona Trail) . The box was unlocked and it was about . 3 mile from the trailhead. I suppose if you were desperate this would be a godsend but some unscrupulous ahole could taint teh water with brown acid or whatnot

Somewhere after this I went under the one tree that had shade and while I was beginning to fill Sonnys bowl with water from my bladder (my pack bladder not my human body bladder...that would be disgusting ) he spotted apack rat nest and of course he stuck his nose in and came up with a piece of cholla cactus like this

stuck to his neck. Unfortunately I failed to bring any tweezers or pliers (we were on a run) so I reverted to the trusty stick method only to move it up to the from of his chin  I ended up knocking it off and then pulling out the three or four needles that were left...he never even flinched> Then he stepped in one

When I got back home I opened the doors to warm the house up while I took my shower and here it is.....

I've been on a tear in the kitchen just for the supplemental heat to fight the single digit temps (and overnight negatives). Just pulled banana nut muffins out of the oven, and have done beef stew, fresh bread, and meatloaf in the last few days. I've got some peaches frozen for a pie and will make a batch or two of granola before i go back to work. Beats desert living, tho.

I’m in Scottsdale right now. We went swimming in the hotel’s heated pool. Paradise Valley is nice in December.

it got all the way up to 15° today. and that's the warmest it's been in a week.
we might get up into the low 20's in 2 weeks.
i hate this fucking place.

After cleaning and rearranging my music room, I went out and sat on a bench in the common area with an acoustic guitar for about an hour and banged out some tunes. Had my shirtsleeves rolled up, and it was lovely.

On a related topic, my (NorCal born and bred) daughter is headed out to Chicago on Wednesday for a three-month internship at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Although she spent the past two winters in Manhattan, she knows the midwest winters can be brutal, as this one appear to be so far, and is not looking forward to this.

oh...she is gonna LOVE this shit.

It’s been in the teens this week. It is extremely cold for DC. I don’t know how anyone lives in places where that is a “normal” winter temp. It is miserable.

Where’s Callie?
Callie has been living the retire lifestyle since maybe summer last year. She is still alert and spunky but she's 13 now (give or take) and beginning around 2015 it started getting more and more difficult to go on walks of any distance. Now we just go like an 1/8 mile every now and then. it's hard for her to get up and down but she gets around and so now she kinda enjoys lounging on her bed and she still loves food more than almost any dog I've see. when feed time comes (twice a day) she does her little hop around dance....sonny is all calm but callie goes dance crazy :embarrassed:

I did take them out for a steak cookout the day after Christmas!

Sounds like a great opportunity for your daughter. The winter may not be all bad. I've heard the forecast for this winter is for extreme variations in temps - very cold to mild - due to an unstable polar vortex (hate when my vortex gets unstable).

Do you know where she will be living while in Chicago? If she needs any tips, LMK.
