just an idea. maybe use a program like TweetDeck or something that allows you to post to Facebook, LinkedIn, and anywhere else you have an account simultaneously.
SO I feel like a "mom and pop" store that just had Walmart open up next door.

a few months later it looks like no one in the area gives a shit about the GC music school. Our business has been picking up since the first of the year too.
That's good. We've got a School of Rock opening in the area and they're running radio and tv ads. I know we'll feel a pinch, but I don't think they're a real concern.

We kick ass and take names, preferably the names of every one of our students neighbors.
School of Rock is a name brand for kids though. I'm sure we'll end up with a lot of their cast-offs who get suckered in by perceived reputation.
OTOH, they have something there I really want... a small format recording studio. I do a lot of recording at LMA, but we don't have custom built rooms for unique tonal characteristics. Someday...

I've come to the conclusion that as long as I keep doing what I do best as good as I can things will work out.

Seriously- you need to figure out what it is your business provides. The man that sold horses back in the 1800's went under when the automobile came out. The man who sold transportation prospered.
Look at the US post office today. They claim they delivered mail. Actually they delivered communication and with the Internet today, Facebook, email and even these forums the Post Office is losing money because the only thing they are mostly good for is delivering spam flyers in your mailbox. If they realized they sold communication they could have easily positioned themselves as a primary ISP.

Mark: FYI. Up here in Minnesota the big news is that Best Buy is on the verge of collapse, the Star-Tribune this morning had headlines that the CEO left under suspicions of "improper behavior" and the flagship store at 494/Lyndale where they piloted the "music store within a store" concept is under heavy remodeling and the music store is GONE, as in "removed from the premises" with no old stock to be bought.
I would not be surprised if the local Best Buy where you are at stops doing this at some point. They are stretched too thin. So your advantage is "personalized service". I've got some other ideas too, more later.

Unless Jack Black is personally giving the lessons, you'll probably be fine. As Mark says, keep doing what you do best (in music that is).
I've been hearing for a while that Best Buy is on the ropes. I don't think they've ever been a factor for us actually. I should go take a look at the one by us this week. I'm in the middle of a couple of projects that hopefully will continue to establish Premier Music (and MWGL) as unique entities.

I went to GC once, asked about a 12 that sounded really nice but the action was really really way too high. So I asked about their service.
The genius took a truss rod wrench and under full tension, just started cranking on it thinking THATS how you do it.
The neck had the proper relief - NOT a truss rod issue at all, it was the bridge that was a mile too high.
After hearing the cracking noises and the Hmmmm ooops noises, I walked out of there never to return.
One guy who worked at a local shop, was fired for drinking and lighting a trash can on fire in the middle of the store, now works there....if THATS any indicator... Oh yeah, he was their tech. Was good once, now he's a fire risk...
Mark, I will only deal with non-box stores. The ma and pa shops. Thats where the knowledge and experience lives.
I will spend more knowing that service is way better... Not just guitar shops, but everything that I can, if I can, goes to smaller more personal shops.
Cause once you own something, you're not buying it again, you already own it. BUT it will need service sooner or later. Big Box shops suck at that.
Hang in there man. Sooner or later, the circle of life will return everybody to wanting smaller ma and pa shops again.
