Shouldn't squirrels be hibernating right now?

If I'm reincarnated as a squirrel, I will stash nuts in my drey instead of bury them - and then I will hibernate.

When I lived in New Hampshire, some of the northern types used to hunt gray squirrel. Apparently, they eat them in some type of stew. I'm not joking. They even have a defined hunting season and daily limit.

I'm a hunter, so I'm well aware of the squirrel season. I have no desire to eat squirrels, tho - so I don't shoot any.

Rabbits are magically delicious, however.

Rabbits hibernate, right? It makes sense - it's probably all of that west and wewaxation that makes them so tender and dewicious.

The Northern Cottontail and Snowshoe hare that live in NH do not hibernate, and I would guess these are the same species that live in PA. Wild wabbit is one of the most delicious animals in all the forest for sure.

If they hibernate, Turbo the Wonderbunny missed the memo. He was hippity-hoppiting around my yard this AM.

Not around here they don't. I saw a good dozen driving around in the foothills yesterday.

I couldn't eat rabbit since I own two as pets, but they are a great food source in some poorer parts of the world.

These two are not open to hunting...

Other fun squirrel fact:

The sweat glands of a tree squirrel are located on their feet, between the foot pads and on their paws between the toes. When hot or excited a squirrel will leave wet tracks on a dry surface

Squirrels are still in season so i'm still out and about for them on weekends. They seem to be everywhere right now.

Rabbits are also still in season but I don't have a dog and i don't feel like pretending I am one in this cold weather. Therefore I don't persue them this time of year.

Squirrels lose over 60% of the nuts they hide. Somebody actually studied that.

And they taste like chicken.

I've never hunted between the end of deer season and spring gobbler season. Apparently I'm way out of my depth when it comes to winter wildlife.

Maybe squirrels were evolving agriculture. They didn't lose nuts, they planted nut trees.

Those little bastards are clever.

Those little bastards would bury walnuts, acorns and chestnuts in the old man's garden. We'd always have trees coming up in the spring. They would raid the bird feeders first before trying to find their nuts. hehe..finding nuts..that's funny for some reason. Anyway, they are smarter than we give them credit I think.
