Tele - my favorite of the bunch. I think everyone did a great job but this music is right up my alley. That swampy southern thing is what I grea up listening to. Scorching lead playing. Loved the tone all around. What guitar/amp are you using? When I say I am looking for an amp, it should be able to do something in that range (player not so much).


This was fantastic. Great job by everyone. All of you guys who said you sucked can no longer say that. No suckage whatsoever. I am already trying to decide what to play next. I have to learn it first so it cant be too hard.

I know exactly what you're saying, and agree. And because I feel I belong in the beginners category doesn't mean I don't want all the tips and ways to improve my playing or recording that I can get. And I never thought I would, or even considered posting anything anywhere either. It's very rare anyone other than myself ever hears my playing. But I'm glad I decided to do it!
 
And I think this is the perfect community to get your feet wet. I mean, we're all pretty level headed, and I know I don't want to piss any of you guys off, so any criticism I have to give would be nothing I wouldn't tell you if we were standing face to face.

You don't get that all the time at HC. :embarrassed:

Yeah, he has always been a harsh critic.

Wait until he hears my song. He always hates my stuff. I'm sure the words 'drivel', 'predictable', and 'generic' will come up in his review...or at least synonyms for those words.
 
Yeah, i actually wouldnt mind some criticism. No need to be insulting about it when done though. I think thats the big key.

That isn't too bad though. You just have to approach anything like this with a thick skin and try to separate the helpful advice from the stylistic preferences of the critic. But having your creation shredded is never fun. I try to comment on someone else's stuff exactly how I would like my own evaluated. Plus if a song is a genre I just do not enjoy at all (like screamo) I will say little to nothing...

No idea. I cant tell everyone signing voices apart like most on GJ seem to be able to. If I had to guess I would have thought Barrista or the last one (the one I voted for). I cant remember the name. Barrista is as close as I can remember your vocals.

I can generally tell Prages voice, but not as easily as Micwalt's. Luckily, my singing/playing is virtually unknown in GJ so no one (but Prages) will have a clue who it is.
 
The vocals on my song are pretty weak this year (especially the backing vocals). I was just getting over a nasty head cold that wrecked my voice for a couple of weeks, so my range was pretty shot. I tried to write a melody that fit with my limited range, but the high harmony part was a real stretch for me this year.

Punchy - interesting choice of effects on the guitars :wink:
Sounds like a good base for a really good song. A bit hard to tell without lyrics and vocals, but promising indeed. Sounds well recorded.

Phil513 - lovely clean tone. I hear some clipping on it though, maybe you're recording a bit too hot? Sounds like converter clipping.
Another one that could sound great when "finished".

Cfgsteak - guitar sounds really good imo.
The song should maybe have been transposed up a bit though, as you seem to struggle a bit on the low notes vocally.

Johnny N - normally I don't care too much for chorus on gtrs, but it works well for this one really.
You do have some noise issues occasionally (internal soundcard or something?), especially at the start and end. Some clever fade-ins/outs could help masking that.
Personally I'd back down on the gain on the vocal mic on the way in, you got some bad distortion happening on the loud notes. Recording lower and then bringing it up afterwards sounds mucho better :)

suhnton - you're posting in the wrong place. This one should be among the experienced guys. Really like the song, and it's very well performed and recorded.
Mixwise, it's incredibly bass-heavy though - could be because of monitoring situation perhaps? Get rid of a lot of low end in the gtrs and bass guitar and this mix would sound great - maybe bring the vocals a tad up as well.
 
Thanks DI, yeah i think i have had a problem with that, it seems i struggle with it especially when i tried distortion. It does sound like its clipping.

I'll try to back off on the volume of the whole mix on the next one. Thanks for the advice. :thu:

thanks! I didn't realize I'd left the bass panned hard left, actually - if i did, I had done that to play with the sound, and left it there unintentionally........

Curious as to how this was recorded. Drum kit/bass was recorded with one mic, right? Sounds a bit too distant to my ears, but that may be what you have to work with :wink:

Maybe trying to use a short reverb on the guitars (and quite a bit of it) would help bringing everything into the same "space", probably.

If anything, sounds like you need a good condensor mic (maybe it's just me, but I hate the piezo sound - on recordings anyway....), that would make it sound mahvelous.

Ferdinandstrat - some really decent chops going on there. And recorded quite well. Tehcnically you're already better than me :embarrassed:
But, imo the recording suffers from most of the "errors" that basically all shredders are guilty of - scooped tone and way too much gain, both quite related. Bring the mids up, and you won't have to use that much gain - which in turn gets you much cleaner recorded tone :)

Chihli - dig the Gilmour delay trick at the beginning.
Great heavy tone as always. Solid rhythm playing :)

Chicken Monkey is a pretty harsh, but he's harsh with everyone. I just assume he won't like my stuff from the get go, and I'm actually amused at his criticisms of my songs. Every once in a while I'll get something positive from him, and I've even agreed with him and changed some things before based on his reviews. It's good to have someone you know isn't blowing smoke up your ass.

I go to one songwriting forum that is full of "Chicken Monkey's" to have new material reviewed. They're tough - but consistent. I think reviewing other peoples songs honestly can help you become a better songwriter yourself also.
 
First off, thanks for the good marks from you guys.
I used a cheap Ibanez acoustic/electric guitar (PF5cent I believe), my toneport ux2 set on acoustic guitar setting, and reaper. That's pretty much it.
Made up the song I as went, and it just worked out.
As for the other songs, I liked them all and all for different reasons.
I just really like music, and I really love the guitar. And I admire anyone who picks one up and pours there heart out with it.
