Well - the possible last country gig went pretty well. We played at a sports bar out by the airport that usually does not book country bands, but the Stock Show is in town (and this is a big show/rodeo) so they decided to book a country band.
Since they had a pretty good sized area for the band to set up in (no stage though), the keyboard player bought most of the light rig. Then he spent about 2 1/2 hours trying to get the whole thing to work - it never did. All the lights are hooked up in a long series and he only had everything working at the same time for about 15 minutes. Otherwise some of the panels were flashing one and off in random patterns and time so we pulled the plug on two of them (he has 5 lighting trees with a total of about 40 to 45 lighting fixtures total). He went nuts over the lights - I watched the Steelers game between helping him out.
The actual show went pretty well. It was our fist gig in 2 1/2 months and our only rehearsal was without the bass player. There were a few rough spots, including one of my vocal numbers (that is out of my range...), but overall it was really tight and felt really good. I could hear my guitars quite well most of the time and I am really happy with my guitar tone right now - the Benford just wails. My high harmonies were not spot on in the first set - which sucks, but it usually takes me a set to warm up properly and some of the notes are just out of my range now. The club owner was there and he was very happy with us and wants to book us during the other big Western weekend - Cheyenne Frontier Days in July. I won't be with the band at that point though. Supposedly two possible replacements for me were going to be at the show, but they did not show up.
It is good to go out on a high note (though I may need to fill in next month), but the night illustrated both the reasons to stay in the band, and the reasons to leave. Ultimately, the leaving reasons outweighed the staying in reasons, but the bottom line is that we really are a very good sounding band and the guys in the band are great people play be in a band with. It is hard to walk away from that.
