Robin Williams "Beard" Movies

I am going to be continuing to teach an Intro to Psychology class. Now that I have some time to prepare I decided to chose some movies to show. With four three-hour classes a week, I can show a movie easily and keep the class from being too bad. I wanted movies that cover mental health issues and realized that three of the four movies I ordered feature Robin Williams. I also realized that he has a beard in each of them. The movies I selected were:

Awakenings - great discussion on the use of medication in mental health.

The Fisher King - Wonderful depiction of a mental breakdown and cognitive/behavioral therapy.

Good Will Hunting - Good depiction of overcoming socialization and gaining self-acceptance.

The Dream Team - No Robin Williams. Just a fun movie.

It's funny, because when I was in college, I was considering Psychology as a major, so I took all kinds of different psych classes... I discovered that psych professors are even more fucked up than psychologists!

I have not seen one of those movies. I know, I fail at cinema.

I'm the one who should fail at cinema.

Awakenings and Fisher King are both movies I saw in college. Good Will Hunting I saw in the theater because it dealt with my studies. My brother turned me on to the Dream Team; it features Michael Keaton and Christopher Lloyd as mental patients who end up on an unchaperoned outing. Very funny.

It is ironic that a movie hater like me will be forced to watch these movies over and over, but the students will appreciate it. :thu:

And then you can compare "Fisher King" with "Fear and Loathing in Loathing in Las Vegas" as they're both Terry Gilliam movies. :helper:

Really?

Gary, I have one that does not contain a bearded Robin Williams, "What about Bob?"

Ah, yes. With a bearded Richard Dreyfuss.

Anytime I am flipping through the TV channels and stumble on that or "Groundhog Day" I am stuck for a while.

Put yer little hand in mine.... Gooood Morning Campers.... it's coooooooooold outside.... :baimun:

I'm not a big What About Bob fan, but Groundhog Day hooks me every time. That and Bill Murray's other rodent movie, Caddyshack.

I noticed that, up until recent years, every time Robin Williams took on a more serious role, he had a beard. Maybe he noticed it too and decided he needed to break the pattern.

How about One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? Then you can end the class by throwing your desk through the window and escaping into the parking lot.

Actually, the depiction of mental illness and its treatment in film would be an interesting topic for class discussion. You could go back and cover films like The Snake Pit (1948), Bigger Than Life (1956) or even The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920).

Insomnia broke the trend....
