I'm in a similar position with a Squier M77. It's a beast of a player but the Duncan Designed pickups are sadly lacking. I picked it up for very little but I sill wonder if it's worth the effort.

If you like the way it plays and feels, why not drop some better pickups in it. Lots of options out there in all price ranges, new and used.
 
I'm actually trying to offload it. I bought it on a whim. I think about it every time I look at it. I have a set of 490/498 sitting around but it goes back to some of the comments about being worth it. If it doesn't sell, that might be a spring project.
