Recommendations for travel binoculars?

Wandering and wondering

The wife and I are taking her parents on an Alaskan cruise. She wants to buy them each a pair of binoculars for the trip. My goto for binoculars would be Nikon, but the wife doesn't want to spend that much.

Any recommendations for binoculars that are simple and light enough for a couple of octogenarians to use?

I have a pair of cheap (Tasco I think) pocket-sized binoculars that I keep in the car. They're just OK. They have plenty of magnification, but due to the small objective lens size, the field of view is very narrow. Since you'll be on a boat and don't really need something that compact, I'd opt for a more "normal" style binocular instaed of the pocket-sized ones. That being said, I also have a pair of normal Nikons at the house that are quite good.

Not that helpful really, but my point is I'd recommend avoiding the pocket-size binoculars unless you really need something that portable.

Two pair of these need to fit into one already overcrowded checked bag. Also, the in-laws are in their 80s, so lightweight is a must.

I have no idea…..

I just picked up a pair of Hawke Vantage HD Binoculars (8x42) for tracking model rockets as the float down and land in the huge field we launch them in. They’re budget binoculars at $200. I had fun on the range yesterday both keeping track of where The Boy’s rockets landed and checking out the massive bald eagle nest a few thousand feet out.

Thanks for the recommendation. That's probably more than the wife will want to spend.
