Race Report: New River Gorge-ous 1/2 marathon.

Even though the consensus here was to run the 8 mile race and try to beat my time from last year, we decided to do the 1/2 marathon since they'd changed the course since last year.

Weather was good. The race didn't start until 11:embarrassed:0, so it was probably 65 or so at the start, and got up to the mid 70s by the time I finished.

At .9 miles into the race, I rolled my ankle really bad. The woman behind me says "Are you okay?" In my mind, I said "What the fuck do you think? Did you see how bad I rolled my ankle? It hurt like hell." What I actually said was "Yeah, I'm fine." and I kept running even though my ankle was hurting. I rolled the same ankle two more times in the next 2 miles.

So, I'm running/jogging with an extremely sore ankle now. When I got to the cutoff for the 8 mile race, I nearly took it just to be finished sooner, but my pride wouldn't let me DNF.

So, the last 10 miles of the race were pretty uneventful as far as injuries go. My ankle was killing me, but I was still jogging for the most part.

Finished the race in 2:25:embarrassed:0.

This is the only trophy I got.

Thankfully, we don't have any races on the schedule until January, so I should have plenty of time to heal up before starting to train for next season. :embarrassed:

Ouch man! That's a seriously rolled ankle. I've turned mine a couple of times, but never flat-out rolled over it. Kudos on having the nuts to finish. I probably would have bailed if I got hurt that badly.

I'm sure Paula will find something in December or January just to keep your conditioning up....:embarrassed:

That is a nasty looking bruise on your foot. Make sure you do take the time to heal before ignoring the collective advice of the Wein list again....

Since I did that in the first mile of the race, which was part of both courses, I don't think ignoring the forum's sage advice was a contributing factor.

FWIW, I never would have beaten last year's time, as they added almost a mile to the short course. If it had been the same course as last year, I'd have probably just done the short course.

I'd be too tempted to cut through the woods where the trails get close to each other. Nice foot.

Those hills are nothing. Check this out from our 1/2 Marathon a few weeks ago:

And this one from the 6 mile loop where I pulled flags from the 50k.

It was a tough course and his ankle and foot really do look awful don't they. He did great though, as we both did and it was a gorgeous day out there.

Well, it wasn't too bad for me, but it wasn't great and I ran into my own set of problems in the last couple of miles that were very tough to overcome. I finished in 3:embarrassed:9ish, and I got the caboose award. It was better than my Trilogy half time, but worse than my Babcock time. In my defense, I would have been around the middle of thet pack for the shorter run, as I passed many of those guys long before they turned off for the finish line, it wasn't until the last couple of miles that I really had problems. and whine.

After seeing the Caboose award, I wish I'd gotten it. :embarrassed:

It was a super nice fleece pullover. Probably goes for about $50-$60 at the gift shop at ACE.

Well - congrats to Mrs P for that then....and just running a half marathon. Anyone who runs one gets my respect. I may try one next summer or fall....

Congrats to both of you for doing the half. Rolling an ankle a mile in really sucks. I would have been concerned that continuing would have done more damage but it looks like your swelling wasnt bad in the picture. Color is nasty but swelling not so bad.

Good job to both of you.

Yeah, the swelling isn't too bad. I could tell when I was running that it was hurt, but not too badly. I'd have quit if I felt like I was doing more damage.

I'll probably give it at least two weeks before I try to run again though. The pain isn't immense, but it's bad enough that I can't really even walk on it without limping, much less run on it.

congrats on finishing with that ankle. I would have stopped if mine looked like that. Who am I kidding, I wouldn't have started even with a perfect ankle.
