Psychedelic Music appreciation thread

Did you know about this Meg Baird band? Came out four years ago but just found out about it a few weeks ago.

I had no idea that existed, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The contrast between Meg Baird's Fairporty/Pentangled vocals and the blazing fuzz guitar is really cool. Or at least I thought so.

Truth be told, I don't think I've listened to Espers or anything else by Meg Baird in a LONG time, maybe 7 or 8 years? Coming back here and then seeing threads like this has made me want to revisit stuff like that. Earlier today I thought about posting a track by Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound, and now you introduce me to an Espers/Comets on Fire/Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound supergroup. Coolness.

Yeah, Heron Oblivion was at a couple of festivals ... I think? I knew of this when it first came out and promptly forgot. Incredibly grateful you have posted it. It's so pretty.

This thread has really delivered. No one seems to have saved off the Spotify list, but I'd humbly suggest that's a great listen, and just keeps improving as you guys add to it.

Got the AMSR feeling from that.

Saw them in Las Vegas in 2007 at a redneck watering hole called the Bunkhouse. They were warming up for the Telescopes. I was in disbelief and delighted that two of my favorite obscure bands were coming to my town! (Usually a city conspicuously absent from indie-centric tour itineraries).

Randall and I had friends in common and after their set, he showed me how to play the riff from that tune (I still can't, he's got crazy long fingers and it's a movable 'G' shape with thumb foldover added). He had such a nice Firebird.

Then the Telescopes started doing their thing. And at that time, their thing was white noise.

Owner of the Bunkhouse was shooting pool in the back with his buddies. After 5-6 minutes of white noise, at high volume, he walks up to the front, yells in Rachel's face (she was sitting on the floor) and unplugs the PA from the wall, as well as her amp.

My wife cried, but I thought it was pretty funny. Weird yelling ensued, but no fighting. My memory was of the owner (absolutely what you are imagining) yelling "Oh, ah'm gonna pay ya. I'm paying ya to shut up."

Anyhow, that tune came to my attention via the Monsters, Bug Men and Robots compilation. If you have any ability to procure that, get it. Yes, buy a CD. It's amazing, and beyond cool.

That's a funny story.

I'd kinda forgot The Telescopes existed, but they were a band that got a fair bit of attention back in the Sounds/NME/Melody Maker days.

I always confused them with Thee Hypnotics.

Kind of a 'lite' version of the Sex Pistols in the Atlanta steak house.

Last night I started realizing that the past decade, most of my fave new guitar-based bands have roots in psych.

Wand, Kikagaku Moyo, A Place To Bury Strangers, Tame Impala/Pond, Wooden Shjips/Rose City ... and Psychfest was pretty remarkable in the first half of the decade. Levitation is cool, but how I wish another event would replicate the scope, size and vibe of the original.
