Proof that cargo shorts are a faux pas

prAna - one of the serious climbing outfitters. Shorts with pocket on side

As far as cycling goes, saddle bags and hydration packs are for "Freds". If I'm wearing regular cycling gear I put my extra tube, c02 cartridge, and tire levers in my jersey back pocket, as well as my drivers license, credit card, and my phone in a baggie in my other jersey pocket. Roadies use water bottles and not hydration packs. But if I'm casually riding my fixie around town I wear shorts like the ones above, were I can put my wallet and phone in the side pocket. Again, saddle bags are for Freds (as are kickstands and helmet mirrors).

I know prana well . They were originally primarily a yoga company. I have owned many prana articles of clothing. Those you picture above are not really cargo but rather a hybrid. They have one flat side pocket and that is where the cargo comparison stops....it’s not even a “bellows” pocket, the material is like polyester and nylon blend with like 10 percent Lycra and zero cotton.....nice try though :thu:

As for cyclists I was thinking in terms of all inclusive and not elitist. A commuter or my biker would have no problem with a pack of some sort and if you were in 1983 you would have no problem with a streamlined saddlebag :cop:

my rig with light weight cargs, rear bag, front bag and bottles. :bigg:

FWIW those are not too bad.....I am primarily concerned for the bloke in 100 percent cotton one with big bellow pockets like the Tig photo above

Yes that's it, showing off. The primary motivation for serious or competitive cyclists. Would you make the same statement about marathon runners? I just got off training ride today with about 50 guys, several of whom are in their seventies. Could slap you or I around on or off the bike.

So the pranas aren't full on cargo? OK then fuck cargo shorts. I agree. What kinds of names can we call people that wear them?

OK, even if you're an inclusive cyclist and have a saddleback that you consider respectable - who puts their phone in their saddlebag? No one is the answer. They put them in the side pockets of their hybrid cargo shorts. Unless they're complete assholes and have full on cargo shorts.

Ooooooooohhh...50 guys. Do tell.

Ummm . . . yeah 50 guys. Not sure what else to tell. All riding bikes. Our Saturday ride is more like 150 and there are small percentage of women, most of whom are some of the best racers in So Cal and a couple national champions. But for some reason the Sunday "coffee ride" is usually all guys.

cyclists who aren't wearing lycra wear cargo shorts because you can't have a wallet in your back pocket while you're on a saddle. same with a phone in your pocket that would fall out. I also wear them sailing for the same reasons. Cargo shorts pockets are all about function over fashion (and they were fashionable at one time, everyone is seemingly unable to remember things that have fallen out of favor).

Oh and climbing shorts are often cargo style.

They're definitely not necessary for sitting on your couch.
Change that for phone and/or wallet on my thigh cargo pocket for me. I don't like things in my rear pockets when cycling. I am old enough now, and still a strong enough cyclist on a mountain bike to be in the "No fucks to give" category on the issue.

That said, the commercial is embarrassing. Ride your bike and stop off for a proper pint, you wanks!

I don’t get the point of cargo shorts. Nobody uses the extra pockets. And the hammer loop is stupid because people doing enough construction to need it use nail guns, not hammers.

Hammers are used in construction everyday. The do much more than hammer nails.

the hammer loop on cargo shorts is still stupid, because anyone who uses a hammer regularly enough to need one on a loop wears a tool belt, but yeah hammers are still pretty ubiquitous in building trades stuff
