This print is hanging in the hallway of a large hotel and conference facility in Toronto.

What the hell is he doing to himself, and why?
And why was that sculpted and placed on a building?

My best guess would be that there were originally leather straps that were affixed to the shoulders... he was a traveller carrying a basket or something on his shoulders.

It's funny some of the ways that statues are interpreted in our days such as how many of them weren't just white marble, but painted with bright colors and gold leaf... and over the years it's worn away and we just see the core of what the artist was working with, not the finished piece.

I’m gonna say that “the ancients” were more fucked up than we think.

care to elaborate ??
Basically whenever the modern version talks about a character seducing someone, it's pretty safe to assume the original text involved kidnapping and rape, especially when said character is male.

In general the level of misogyny is dialed to 11 compared to any modern version, which is not that surprising since places like Athens were absolute dogshit when it came to women's status in society and agency over their own lives.

Then there's the violence, which in a lot of cases is way more graphical than in modern versions. The Iliad for example has quite a habit of describing any major character's injuries and how they were obtained in pretty gruesome details.
